Men's and Women's Swimming And Diving Defeat Alma;
Track and Field Athletes Compete at Rose-Hulman (indoor) Engineer Invitational
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ALMA -- The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up dual meet victories at Alma on Saturday with the women's team defeating the Alma women's team 137-86 while the men's team defeated the Alma men's team 124-84.
The Calvin women's swimming and diving team is now 6-3 in dual meet competition while the Calvin men's team is 2-6.
The women's competition was once again highlighted by the performance of senior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) who shattered a school record for the third consecutive weekend, winning the three-meter board with a score of 315.20 points, breaking her previous record of 299.10 (for six dives) set just a week ago in a dual meet against Hope. Deur also won the one-meter competition with a score of 294.05.
Other individual winners for the Calvin women included junior Emily Roberts (Dekalb, IL) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:20.37), junior Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) in the 50 freestyle (25.94) and 100 freestyle (55.35), sophomore Kelley Barr (Dover, DE) in the 200 IM (2:22.16), senior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) in the 100 fly (1:00.63), junior Laura Price (Warren, PA) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.54) and sophomore Jean Buteyn (Eden Prairie, MN) in the 500 free (5:33.39).
In the men's competition, Calvin picked up individual victories from sophomore Tyler Westman (Naperville, IL) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:12.48) and 500 freestyle (5:15.27), senior Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) in the 200 free (1:50.66) and 100 fly (54.25), freshman Ethan Tatum (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200 IM (2:08.93) and freshman Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH) in the 100 freestyle (50.34).
Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday, hosting Kalamazoo in dual meets.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
TERRE HAUTE, IN -- A group of Calvin men's and women's track and field athletes competed at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Invitational on Saturday with several athletes posting strong performances. A highlight for both Calvin teams was the performance of their distance medley squads.
On the women's side, Calvin's distance medley relay team of junior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA), junior Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS), freshman Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) took first place with a time of 12:21.76. On the men's side, Calvin's distance medley relay squad of sophomore Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN), senior Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT), freshman Colin Vance (Fort Wayne, IN) and senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) took first in a time of 10:27.05.
In the men's 5,000 meters, sophomore Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) took first place with a time of 15:23.15. Other notable performances for the Calvin men included a third place finish by junior (Fargo, ND) in the high jump (6-3 3/4), a third place finish by senior Corey Velgersdyk (Bloomington, MN) in the long jump (19-9 3/4), a third place finish by senior Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) in the 3,000 meters (8:51.03) and a third place finish by Cok in the 400 meters (50.72).
Other notables for the Calvin women included a first place finish by Koning in the 400 meters (58.99), a third place finish by senior Kristen Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA) in the 400 meters (1:01.48) and a second place finish by senior Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) in the triple jump (35-5).
Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare to compete at the Grand Valley Open next Friday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
