Women's Swimming and Diving Team Captures Chicago Invitational - Men Place
Fourth/ Hockey Team Falls to Hope in OT Shootout)
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
CHICAGO, IL -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team closed out an
impressive two days of competition at the University of Chicago Invitational,
winning the meet with a team score of 1,251.83 points.
Senior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) broke her second school record in as
many days, winning the one-meter diving competition with a school record point
total of 489.50 points, breaking her previous school record of 487.00 points.
On Friday night, Deur broke her own school record on the three-meter board with
a first place score of 505.55 points.
Also taking first place for Calvin on Saturday individually were senior Cara
VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) in the 200 freestyle (1:57.57) and 100
freestyle (54.40), junior Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) in the 100
breaststroke (1:07.39) and 200 breaststroke (2:25.47) and sophomore Monica
Bressler (Sandusky, OH) in the 200 backstroke (2:15.95).
Calvin’s 400 freestyle relay of VanWoerkom, junior Emily Roberts (DeKalb,
IL), sophomore Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN) and junior Laura Price (Warren,
PA) took first place with a time of 3:40.92 while its 800 freestyle relay of
VanWoerkom, Kinzer, Price and senior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) clocked in
with a first place time of 8:02.31. Calvin’s 200 medley relay of sophomore
Brianna VandenEnde (Huntsville. ON), Roberts, Wolfe and Vail took first place
with a time of 1:51.41.
Calvin was particularly affective in the one-meter diving competition as the
Knights took the top five spots with junior Casey Herman (Libertyville, IL)
posting a season-best and second place score of 411.50 points while senior
Jeena Velzen (Unity Christian HS) was third (384.30), junior Joy Leach
(Charlottsville, VA) fourth (371.75) and sophomore Carmen Brummel (Unity
Christian HS) fifth (339.70).
Other notables for the Calvin women included second place finishes by Price in
the 200 freestyle (1:58.08), Roberts in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.90),
Bressler in the 100 backstroke (1:02.64) and Jo Vander Linde (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) in the 200 backstroke (2:17.76).
Calvin will now prepare to host its first-ever dual meet inside the Venema
Aquatic Center. Calvin will host rival Hope in a conference dual meet inside
the facility on January 24 at 1:00 p.m.

MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
CHICAGO, IL – Calvin took fourth place at the University of Chicago
Invitational with a team score of 404 points. Host Chicago took first place
with a team score of 996 points.
Senior Dennis Steenbergen (Aylmer, ON) picked up his second victory of the
meet, winning the one-meter diving competition (388.85), one night after
winning three-meter competition.
Other top finishes for the Calvin men included senior Keith Conrad finishing
third in the 100 butterfly (54.47) and fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:03.72),
freshman Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH) placing fourth in the 200 freestyle
(1:48.17) and junior Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) finishing
sixth in the 100 backstroke (57.18).

MEN’S CLUB ICE HOCKEY
The Calvin men’s ice hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime
shootout loss at rival Hope late Saturday night. Calvin is now 11-7-0 on the
year. The loss was the second of the year for Calvin against Hope as the Flying
Dutchmen defeated the Knights in Grand Rapids 7-4 on December 5. On Friday,
Calvin defeated Davenport 7-3 to open the second half of its season schedule.
In the shootout loss to Hope, Calvin outshot the Flying Dutchmen 36-35. Reed
Loney scored a pair of goals for the Knights with Bart Tocci picking up
Calvin’s other goal. Eric Doezema was also credited with one assist for
Calvin.
Chris Pasma was in nets for the Knights and posted 32 saves.
Calvin is back in action Friday night when it hosts Saginaw Valley State
University at 9:00 p.m. at the Jolly Roger Ice Arena.
