Deur Breaks Calvin Three-Meter Record At U. of Chicago Invitatational

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

CHICAGO, IL -- Calvin College senior Erica Deur added another chapter in her storied collegiate diving career on Friday night, shattering her own school record on the three-meter board (11 dives) with a score of 505.55 points at the University of Chicago invitational. A graduate of Holland Christian High School, Deur eclipsed her previous school record of 485.20 points in the event. Her point total on Friday night was also a University of Chicago pool record.

Deur helped Calvin sweep the top four spots in the three-meter competition with junior Casey Herman (Libertyville, IL) taking second (378.60), sophomore Carmen Brummel (Unity Christian HS) taking third (346.70) and senior Jeena Velzen (Unity Christian HS) taking fourth (336.15).

Deur's victory on the three-meter board was one of three individual victories for Calvin Friday night as senior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) won the 50 freestyle (24.83) and junior Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) won the 200 IM (2:11.77). Vail was part of a one-two Calvin finish in the 200 IM with junior Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL) taking second (2:13.25). VanWoerkom was part of a one-two Calvin finish in the 50 freestyle as sophomore Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH) was second (25.41).

In addition, Calvin's 200 freestyle relay of VanWoerkom, senior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH), Bressler and Vail took first place with a time of 1:40.12.

Other notables for the Calvin women included a second place finish by junior Laura Price (Warren, PA) in the 500 freestyle (5:15.66) and a second place finsh by Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Bressler, Vail, Wolfe and VanWoerkom with a time of 4:03.94.

On the men's side, Calvin's top individual performance came from senior Dennis Steenbergen (Aylmer, ON) who captured the three-meter diving competition (358.65). Other notables for the Calvin men included a ninth place finish by freshman Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH) in the 500 freestyle (4:58.56) with senior teammate Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) close behind in 10th place (4:58.60). Junior Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was eighth in the 50 freestyle (22.55) while Calvin's 200 freestyle relay tea of freshman Ethan Tatum (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Battoclette, junior Jon Herrema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and VanAllsburg took fifth (1:30.32).

Calvin's 400 medley relay team of sophomore Tyler Westman (Naperville, IL), Conrad, Herrema and Tatum added a sixth place time of 3:48.30.
