SIOUX CENTER, IA -- In a meeting of regionally-ranked teams, the visiting Knights of Calvin defeated the Dordt College Blades 5-2 in front of nearly 900 fans at the Vernon Arena. Ranked third in the ACHA Division III North Region, Calvin (8-4-1) used a come-from-behind effort to defeat Dordt, ranked second in the ACHA Division III Pacific Division.
Dordt jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first period but Calvin tied the score with two goals in the second period and added three in the third to pull away for the win. Calvin outshot Dordt 24-15 in the final two periods and held a 36-24 shots at goal advantage overall.
Scoring goals for Calvin were Justin Blaauwendraat, Ben Regts, Ben Brandsen, Matthew Zantingh and Chuck Hofbauer. Brandsen picked up the game-winner, breaking a 2-2 tie with a goal with 13:28 left in the third period. Calvin goaltender Chris Pasma had 24 saves for the Knights.
Before the game, a pre-game ceromonial dropping of the puck was administered by Dordt Vice President of Advancement John Baas. A Calvin graduate and a former Calvin staff member, Baas donned a Calvin hockey jersey while dropping the ceremonial first puck.
After the game, both teams posed for photos together.
"Dordt has a fine team and they came out with a lot of energy," said Calvin hockey coach Mike Petrusma. "We were able to make some adjustments in between periods and to the credit of our players, they responded to the challenge. The atmopshere inside the arena was terrific and I know both teams really enjoyed the game."
Calvin returns to action on Friday at 4:15 p.m. (CST) against Wisconsin-Platteville. The Knights will then face the University of Wyoming on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. (CST). The winner of the four-team quadrangular will receive the tournament's Cob Cup.
