MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER
A trio of Calvin College soccer players have received ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District IV honors in the college division as defensive backs
Juliana Litts and Allison Boender have been named to the all-district women's
second team while junior forward Michael Holwerda of the men's team has been
named to the all-district men's second team.
The college division of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program ®)
includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Academic All-District and
All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director's
Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an individual
must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30.
Litts is from Alexandria, Virginia. She is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High
School. Litts has been a four-year starter on defense on a Calvin team that
has posted 55 shutouts during that span. A three-time member of the MIAA
Academic Honor Roll, Litts carries a 3.81 grade point average while majoring in
Spanish
and Speech Pathology. A year ago, Litts was named to the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District IV third team.
Boender is from Grandville and is a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian
High School. A two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, Boender is
majoring in nursing and carries a 3.96 grade point average. Boender began her
career as a midfielder but has moved into Calvin's defensive rotatation and
helped the Knights record 11 shutout victories this fall. Earlier this year,
she was name MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. She also has one goal on the
year.
Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, the Calvin women's soccer team
is currently 14-2-1 overall and ranked fourth nationally. Calvin will host
Saint Mary's on Saturday in a first round MIAA Tournament game at noon.
On the men's side, Holwerda is receiving ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District IV honors for the first time. A psychology major, Holwerda carries
a 3.75 grade point average. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand
Rapids Christian High School, Holwerda is a two-time member of the MIAA
Academic Honor Roll.
A year ago, he landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team after collecting 25
points on the strength of nine goals and seven assists. This year, Holwerda has
nine points on the strength of three goals and three assists. Two of his goals
have been game-winners.
Under the direction of head coach Chris Hughes, the Calvin men's soccer team
is currently ranked 21st nationally. The Knights are 14-3-0 overall and 13-0-0
in the MIAA. Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Hope for a
2:00 p.m. contest.
