Men’s Soccer Gets Back on Winning Track With Big Win at Trinity International;
Men's Golf Takes 5th at First MIAA Outing
MEN'S SOCCER

DEERFIELD, IL – Calvin got back on the winning track with a 5-1 victory at
Trinity International on Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-2-0 on the
year.
Calvin led 2-1 at halftime and then broke the game open with three goals in the
second half.
Sophomore Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) put the Knights on the
board with a goal in the 12th minute of play on an assist from junior Michael
Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). The goal was the third of
the year for Hooker. Holwerda then scored on an a feed from junior Alex
McKenzie (Antioch, IL) in the 19th minute of play to give the Knights a 2-0
lead. Trinity International cut the Calvin lead in half with a goal in the 33rd
minute but the Knights responded with a stellar second half surge.
Senior Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA) opened the second half scoring with a goal
in the 56th minute and moments later, junior Alex McKenzie (Antioch, IL) scored
off a feed from Holwerda. Holwerda then completed a superb afternoon with a
goal in the 62nd minute of play with VanSlyke drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin held a 25-13 shots at goal advantage. Senior Darrin Cline went the first
70 minutes in goal for the Knights, collecting four saves with sophomore Ryan
Bratt (Silver Spring, MD) coming on for the final 20 minutes and recording one.
Bratt’s entrance into the game marked his Calvin varsity debut.
Calvin will now break until September 19 and 20 when it competes at the Ohio
Northern Border Battle with Calvin facing Baldwin-Wallace on September 19 and
host Ohio Northern on September 20.
MEN’S GOLF
ALMA – Calvin took fifth in the first MIAA outing of the year, posting a score
of 311 strokes Saturday afternoon. Saturday’s MIAA outing was held at the Pine
River Country Club with Alma College serving as host.
Olivet took first place with a course record score of 293 strokes.
Calvin’s top individual finisher was junior Kyle Harvey (Willard, OH) with a
round of 76 that left him in a tie for 17th place.
Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were Junior Aaron Hargett (Lakewood-Lake Odessa
HS) and sophomore Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of
78, junior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 79 and
sophomore Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 84.
Mark McLaughlin of Albion was Saturday’s medalist with a round of 69.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday, competing at an MIAA outing hosted by
Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club beginning at 1:00 p.m.
