Tilton & VanWoerkom Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams
Two Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the at-large college division. On the men's side, senior Ricky Tilton has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team while junior Cara VanWoerkom has received first team honors on the women's side.
Both individuals now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.
The college division of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director'sAssociation of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an individual must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. The at-large division includes the sports of of golf, tennis, swimming, waterpolo, ice hockey, field hockey and lacrosse.
Tilton is receiving ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honor for the second time. He was also so honored in 2006. He was recently selected as Calvin's recipient of the Bere' Memorial Award - given to the top senior male student-athlete at Calvin.
Tilton has been a four-year member of the Calvin men's tennis program.While at Calvin, he has compiled a career singles mark of 50-25 and a career doubles record of 59-24. He has also put together a 38-21 career singles record while playing at No. 1 singles and a 37-16 mark at No. 1 doubles.
Tilton hails from Gap, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Lancaster County Christian High School. A biochemistry major with a Spanish minor, Tilton carried a 3.96 grade point average at Calvin. Tilton was graduated from Calvin this past weekend. He plans to attend medical school and is currently choosing which school to attend. Eventually, he plans to use his medical education and Spanish language skills overseas.
VanWoerkom hails from Wyoming and is a graduate of Calvin Christian High School. VanWoerkom holds a double major in Spanish and biology.
VanWoerkom is a five-time NCAA III All-American and a five-time NCAA III Honorable Mention All-American. This past winter, she was the MIAA champion in the 50 freestyle and the MIAA runner-up in the 100 free and 200 free. In addition, she was a member of the 2008 All-MIAA team.
At the 2008 NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships, she took 14th in the 50 free and 16th in the 100 free at 2008. She was also a member of Calvin's All-America 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. In 2007, she was the NCAA III runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay. She Helped Calvin finish sixth at the 2006 NCAA III Championships, fourth at the 2007 national meet and eighth at the 2008 nationals.
VanWoerkom is a two-time member of MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a two-time College Swim Coaches Association All-Academic team.
