Calvin Track and Field Athletes Receive All-MIAA Honors - Wittingen/Bratt/Jensen Named MIAA MVPs;
Nate Pocock Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Three members of the Calvin track and field program have received MVP honors. On the women's side, senior Sarah Wittingen has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for the third straight year while junior Julie Bratt has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Field Event Performer. On the men's side, senior Ryan Jensen has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Field Event Performer.

Wittingen is from East Grand Rapids and is a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School. At the MIAA Field Day last weekend at Alma College, Wittingen captured league titles in the 100 hurdles (14.47) and 400 meter hurdles (1:01.40), winning both events for the third straight year. Her time in the 100 hurdles was an NCAA III provisional qualifying time while her time in the 400 meter hurdles was an automatic qualifying time. She also anchored Calvin's 4x400 meter relay to a first place finish and anchored Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team to a second place finish.

A native of Lynden, Washington, and a graduate of Lynden Christian High School, Bratt is receiving MIAA MVP honors for the first time. At the MIAA Field Day, she captured the league triple jump title for the third straight year, recording a jump of 35-10. She also won the MIAA long jump title with a leap of 16-10 3/4.

Jensen is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Northview High School. At the MIAA Field Day, Jensen defended his league discus title with a throw of 144-7 while also placing third in the shot put with a throw of 47-2 1/2.

In addition, 11 members of the Calvin women's track and field team have received All-MIAA honors while seven members of the Calvin men's track and field team have been so honored.

Named to the All-MIAA women's team from Calvin are Wittingen, Bratt, senior Christina Overbeck, juniors Lauren Bergstrom, Calah Schlabach and Kristen Van Sickel, sophomores Heather Koning, Leigha Oberle and Elizabeth Smit and freshmen Jessica Koster and Kim Wigboldy.

Named to the All-MIAA men's team from Calvin are Jensen, seniors Jared Cok and Tim Finnegan, juniors Jed Christiansen and Nate DeHaan and freshmen Eric Michel and Alex Wrobel.

Wittingen is receiving All-MIAA honors for the fourth consecutive year. She is the 16th individual from the Calvin women's track and field team to receive All-MIAA honors four straight years. Bratt and Overbeck are receiving All-MIAA accolades for the third straight year. Overbeck is from Seattle, Washington. She is a graduate of Bellevue Christian High School. At the MIAA Field Day, Overbeck captured the 10,000 meter title for the third straight year, posting an MIAA record time of 35:45.57, breaking the previous MIAA record of 37:09.45 set by Calvin's Lindsay Carrier in 2001.

Bergstrom and Schlabach are receiving All-MIAA honors for the second time. Bergstrom is from Rochester, Minnesota, and is a graduate of Rochester Century High School. At the MIAA Field Day, she took first place in both the 800 meters (2:16.60) and 1500 meters (4:36.36). Her time in the 1500 meters just missed the MIAA record of 4:36.02 set by Calvin's Sarah Gritter in 1999. Schlabach is from St. Michaels, Arizona, and is a graduate of St. Michaels High School. Schlabach was the MIAA champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase last weekend, winning with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 10:59.01. Koning, Koster, Smit, Wigboldy, Oberle and Van Sickel are all receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time.

Koning is from Kalamazoo and is a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School. At the MIAA Field Day, she captured a league title in the 400 meters (57.62) and took third in the 200 meters (25.87). She also ran a leg on Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team and its second place 4x100 meter relay team. Koster is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. She was the MIAA champion in the 5,000 meters last weekend with a time of 18:10.53. Oberle is also from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Oberle was the MIAA runner-up in the discus last weekend. Smit is from Kirkland, Washington. She is a graduate of Bellevue Christian High School. Smit was the MIAA runner-up in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:14.76). Van Sickel is from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of Trinity Christian High School. At the MIAA Field Day, she was second in the 400 meters (59.05) and ran a leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 met!
 er relay team. Wigboldy is from Chandler, Arizona, and is a graduate of Chandler Valley Christian High School. Wigboldy was the MIAA champion last weekend in the javelin throw (118-3).

On the men's side, Christiansen and Finnegan are receiving All-MIAA honors for the third time while Jensen, Cok and DeHaan are receiving the honor for the second time. At the MIAA Field Day last weekend, Finnegan claimed his third MIAA 10,000 meter title, winning with a time of 31:55.33. Finnegan is from Los Alamos, New Mexico. Meanwhile, Christiansen picked up his second MIAA title in the 5,000 meters, winning with a time of 15:03.15. Christiansen is from Greenville, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Greenville High School.

Cok is from Bozeman, Montana, and is a graduate of Manhattan Christian High School. At the MIAA Field Day, he took second in the 400 meters (48.69), fourth in the 200 meters (22.11) and anchored Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team.

A native of Byron Center and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School, DeHaan picked up the MIAA title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second straight year, winning with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 9:17.65.

Wrobel is from Arden Hills, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Mounds View High School. At the MIAA Field Day, Wrobel captured the league title in the 800 meters (1:57.84), was second in the 1500 meters (4:01.70) and ran a leg on Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team. Michel is from Naperville, Illinois. He is a graduate of Naperville Central High School. At the MIAA Field Day, Michel took first place in the pole vault with a vault of 14-1 1/4.

Both Calvin track and field teams wrapped up MIAA titles this past weekend with the men's taking first place at the MIAA Field Day with 254 points while the women's team took first place with 328.5 points. The MIAA title was the 15th straight for the Calvin men and the 20th straight for the Calvin women.

BASEBALL -- POCOCK NAMED MIAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK

For the second time in his career, Calvin College junior Nate Pocock has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week. A native of Wayland, Massachusetts, Pocock went six innings without allowing an earned run last Wednesday in gaining his seventh victory of the season in a 12-3 Calvin victory over Albion. Pocock scattered seven hits, allowed one (unearned) run and struck out seven and walked only one. A graduate of Wayland (MA) High School, Pocock was also named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in 2006. Pocock is currently 7-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.

Ranked 22nd by the most recent D3baseball.com Top-25 poll, Calvin is currently 28-8 on the year and scheduled to travel to Kalamazoo Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader slated to start at 2:00 p.m. The game will be aired via Stretch Internet broadcast with a live stats scoreboard available at: http://www.kzoo.edu/sports/live/xlive.htm
