Tennis Teams Advance to Championship Finals of MIAA Tournament Play;
Baseball Moves Into First Place of MIAA Standings

MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Adrian 0
Calvin 7, Albion 2

KALAMAZOO -- For the second straight year, Calvin is headed to the championship finals of the MIAA Tournament to face host Kalamazoo College. The Knights (14-5 overall) reached the championship finals with a 6-0 first round win over Adrian and a 7-2 semifinal win over Albion. Kalamazoo (12-10) advanced to Saturday's championship final with an 8-1 win over Hope. With the win, Kalamazoo clinched at least a share of its 70th consecutive MIAA title as the final league crown is a combination of the league tournament and dual match season.

The winner of Saturday's Calvin-Kalamazoo match will receive an automatic bid to next week's NCAA III Tournament. Kalamazoo is ranked 27th nationally and sixth in the Central Region. Calvin is ranked 10th in the Central Regoin.

In the win over Adrian, Calvin swept the three doubles matches and then closed out the win with victories by junior Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) at No. 1 singles, junior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) at No. 2 singles and junior Nick Steenstra (Unity Christian HS) at No. 3 singles.

In the victory over Albion, Calvin swept the three doubles flights with junior Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) and DeMaagd winning at No. 1 doubles, senior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA) and senior Mike Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Matt and Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) winning at No. 3 doubles.

Picking up singles victories for the Knights were Tilton at No. 1 singles, Zeilstra at No. 2 singles, DeMaagd at No. 3 singles and Andrew DeVlieger at No. 6 singles.

WOMENS TENNIS

ALBION -- For the first time in school history, the Calvin women's tennis team has advanced to the finals of the MIAA Tournament. The Knights will face host Albion in Saturday's championship final. Saturday's final is set to start at noon with the winner receiving an automatic bid to next week's NCAA III Tournament. The meeting will be the second this week between the two teams with Albion (17-2) defeating Calvin (18-5) in Grand Rapids 5-4 Monday afternoon.

Calvin opened MIAA Tournament play on Friday with a 5-0 win over Adrian with the Knights sweeping the three doubles points and then picking up wins from freshman Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 1 singles and sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Chrisitan HS) at No. 4 singles to close out the match.

The win advanced Calvin into the tournament semifinals against rival Hope and the Knights quickly fell behind 2-1, dropping two of the three doubles matches. Calvin rebounded to win all six singles flights to gain the come-from-behind win.

Picking up singles victories against the Flying Dutch were Oosterhouse at No. 1 singles, freshman Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) at No. 2 singles, sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 singles, Strikwerda at No. 4 singles and freshman Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) at No. 5 singles.

Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 1 singles with Strikwerda and Oosterhouse combining for the win.

BASEBALL

Calvin moved into first place in the MIAA standings with the help of Albion College on Friday as Albion swept a doubleheader from Adrian on Friday, defeating the Bulldogs 9-8 and 5-3. Adrian is now 13-5 in MIAA play, allowing Calvin (13-4 MIAA) to move a half-game ahead of the Bulldogs.

Calvin is scheduled to travel to Olivet for a conference doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast via Stretch Internet. A live stats scoreboard courtesy of Olivet will also be provided.
