Softball Splits With Grand Rapids Community College
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Albion 5, Calvin 4
KENTWOOD -- The Calvin women's tennis team nearly completed an amazing comeback but fell just short in an MIAA showdown Monday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, falling to Albion 5-4. With the win, defending MIAA co-champion Albion gains the top seed for this weekend's MIAA Tournament which the Britons will host. Calvin trailed 4-2 but rattled off wins at No. 3 and No. 2 singles before the Britons sealed the team victory with a three-set win at No. 5 singles.
Ranked 14th in the most recent Division III Central Region rankings Albion (16-2 overall, 8-0 MIAA) took the early advantage, winning two of the three doubles points, leaving the Britons the opportunity to win the match by splitting the six singles points. Ranked 10th in the Central Region, Calvin picked up a win at No. 2 doubles from the tandem of freshman Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Calvin received singles victories from Spoelhof at No. 2 singles, sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 singles and sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) at No. 4 singles.
Calvin is now 15-5 overall and 6-1 in MIAA dual match play. The Knights close out their dual match campaign on Tuesday with a match against Alma slated to start at noon. Calvin has already wrapped up the #2 seed for this week's MIAA Tournament. KENTWOOD -- In softball action on Monday, Calvin split a doubleheader with Grand Rapids Community College, defeating the Raiders 4-3 in game one and falling 4-3 in game two. The results will not be counted on Calvin's final season record as the games did not come against a four-year institution.

Junior Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored while senior Jalean Makedonsky (Imlay City) and junior Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores H) both batted in a run.
In game two, sophomore Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) took the loss. Calvin outhit the Raiders 9-7 but committed three errors which led to a pair of unearned runs. Grand Rapids Community College took the lead with three runs in the fifth. Calvin scored a run in the sixth and had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh but could bring home the tying run.
