Women's Tennis Defeats Hope - Remains Unbeaten in MIAA Play

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Hope 2

KENTWOOD -- The Calvin women's tennis team remained unbeaten in MIAA play and improved to 15-4 overall with a 7-2 victory over rival Hope Thursday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Ranked 10th in the most recent Division III Central Region rankings, the Knights are now 6-0 in MIAA dual match competition and are just one win behind league-leading Albion (7-0 MIAA). Calvin will host Albion on Monday at the Gainey Athletic Complex in a match set to start at 3:00 p.m.

A year ago, Calvin fell to Hope twice but on Thursday, the Knights took control from the outset, claiming two of the three doubles points. Picking up wins for Calvin were freshman Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) at No. 1 doubles while freshman Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 2 doubles.

The Knights then took five of the six singles points, winning four of the five matches in straight sets. Singles winners for Calvin included Oosterhouse at No. 1 singles, Spoelhof at No. 2 singles, sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 singles, Strikwerda at No. 4 singles and freshman Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) at No. 5 singles.

Geenen and Oosterhouse both reached the 15-win mark in singles play with their wins on Thursday with Geenen now holding a 15-4 singles record and Oosterhouse a 15-3 singles mark.
