Women's Tennis Remains Undefeated in MIAA Play With Win at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO -- The Calvin women's tennis team picked up a key 6-3 conference victory at Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon in a meeting of regionally-ranked teams. Calvin entered the match ranked 10th in the most recent Central Region rankings while Kalamazoo entered the match ranked 13th. With the win, Calvin improves to 14-4 overall and more importantly to 5-0 in MIAA play heading into a rivalry match with Hope on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. with Calvin set to host the match.
Calvin's win over Kalamazoo on Tuesday marked its first win over the Hornets in five years. Calvin opened the match slow, dropping two of the three doubles points but rebounded to win five of the six singles points to claim the win. Sophomore Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) clinched the match for the Knights with a three set win at No. 6 singles.
Calvin's lone doubles victory came at No. 3 doubles with sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) winning 8-4. In addition to VanVeen, singles victories from Calvin came at No. 1 singles from freshman Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS), at No. 3 singles from Geeen, at No. 4 singles from sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) and at No. 5 singles from freshman Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS).
Calvin is now 5-4 against regionally-ranked opponents this year.
