Track and Field Teams Take First Place at MIAA Jamboree;
Men's Tennis Completes GLCA Tournament With 2-1 Record;
Women's Tennis Falls to Grand Valley State;
Softball Finishes Illinois Wesleyan Tournament With Loss to U. of Chicago
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALMA -- Under a new scoring format, the Calvin men's and women's track and field teams held off strong challenges from Hope to win both ends of the first-ever MIAA Jamboree. The competition was held at Alma College. On the men's side, Calvin took first place with 924 points, finishing 52.5 points ahead of second place Hope. On the women's side, Calvin took first place with 944 points, finishing 26.5 points ahead of second place Hope.
Saturday's MIAA Jamboree featured a scoring format where every competitor (three per team) scored points based on the order of finish. The Jamboree replaced league dual meets this spring and will count toward half of the seasonal standings.
MEN'S RECAP
An across-the-board effort propelled Calvin to the first place finish on Saturday as the Knights took first place in nine events.
Freshman Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN) had a huge day for the Knights, winning the 1500 meters by three-tenths of a second with a time of 4:05.41 and then winning the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.02.
Senior Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) also had a huge day for the Maroon and Gold, winning the 100 meters with a time of 10.99 in his first appearance in the event this year. Cok also took second in the 400 meters (48.67) and third in the 200 meters (22.60). In addition, he led off Calvin's second place 4x100 meter relay team (42.99) and anchored Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team that clocked in with a season-best time of 3:22.49. He was joined on the 4x100 meter relay team by senior Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Brad Stroner (Lakewood HS) and sophomore Cory Velgersdyk (Bloomington, MN). He was joined on the 4x400 meter relay team by sophomore Zack VanderLaan (Holt Central Lutheran HS), Stroner and Baker.
Baker also had a strong day, finishing second in the 100 meters (11.13), third in the 400 meters (50.71) and fourth in the 200 meters (22.79).
Other first place performers for Calvin on Saturday included freshman Eric Michel (Naperville, IL) in the pole vault (13-5 3/4), junior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) in the 10,000 meters (32:37.36), junior Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:28.40), junior Andrew Stutzman (Kutztown, PA) in the 5,000 meters (15:24.59) and senior Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) in the discus (152-0). Jensen added a second place throw of 46-1 1/2 in the shot put.
Other notables for the Calvin men included junior Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL) taking second in the 10,000 meters (32:37.78), senior Brian Wilmarth (Chatham, IL) taking second in the 800 meters (1:57.20), VanderLaan taking third in the 400 meter hurdles (58.12) and senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) taking second in the 5,000 meters (15:25.87).
WOMEN'S RECAP
Like the Calvin men, the Calvin women's team received production from a variety of sources to claim first place on Saturday. Senior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) was the catalyst for the Knights, winning the 100 meter hurdles (15.10) and 400 meter hurdles (1:03.68) while also tying for second place in the high jump (4-11 3/4).
She also anchored Calvin's second place 4x100 meter relay team that came in with a time of 49.75 and Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that won with a time of 3:58.93. Wittingen was joined on the 4x100 meter relay team by senior Sarah Weller (Calvin Christian HS), freshman Kim Holtrop (Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS). Wittingen was joined on the 4x400 meter relay team by junior Kristen Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA), freshman Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) and Koning.
Calvin took first place in 12 events on Saturday with junior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) joining Wittingen was a double winner with Bergstrom winning the 1,500 meters (4:50.53) and 800 meters (2:17.82). Bergstrom led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 1,500 meters and a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 800 meters. Freshman Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in both the 1,500 meters (4:53.07) and 800 meters (2:19.59).
Other individual winners for Calvin on Saturday included junior Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) in the triple jump (35-3 3/4), sophomore Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the discus (133-8), junior Annika Krysgman (Whitinsville Christian HS) in the javelin (110-1), senior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) in the 10,000 meters (38:03.00), sophomore Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:29.99), Koning in the 400 meters (58.99) and sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 5,000 meters (18:08.20).
Other notables for the Calvin women included a second place finish by Boerner (59.81) and a third place finish by Van Sickel (59.93) in the 400 meters. In addition, Bratt was second in the long jump (15-11 3/4), freshman Hayley Faber (Elkhorn, NE) was second in the triple jump (33-4), senior Rachel VanderWiele (Holland Christian HS) was second in the discus (119-6), freshman Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ) was third in the javelin (105-3), junior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:30.12), junior Jesi Hale (Rehoboth, NM) second in the 5,000 meters (18:09.77) and freshman Bethany Beachum (Fruitport HS) second in both the 100 meters (13.17) and 200 meters (26.61).
Both Calvin teams will now break until next Friday when they compete at the Wheaton Twilight Invitational.

MEN'S TENNIS
WOOSTER, OH -- The Calvin men's tennis team closed out the GLCA Tournament hosted by the College of Wooster with a 5-0 victory over Oberlin College Saturday afternoon. Calvin picked up singles victories from junior Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) and freshman Matt DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) and swept all three doubles points with Zeilstra and junior Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) winning at No. 1 doubles, senior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA) and senior Mike Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Matt DeVlieger and Andrew DeVlieger winning at No. 3 doubles.
Earlier in the tournament, Calvin dropped a 6-0 decision to nationally-ranked Kenyon and defeated Wooster 5-0.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Hope for a key conference match slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

KENTWOOD -- Calvin dropped a 7-2 decision to Division II Grand Valley State on Saturday at the MVP Fitness Center to fall to 13-4 on the year. Calvin picked up its first point at No. 1 doubles with the tandem of freshman Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) picking up an 8-4 win. Calvin's lone singles point came at No. 3 singles with sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) picking up a win in three sets.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a key conference match set to start at 4:00 p.m.
