BASEBALL
Grand Valley State 10, Calvin 1

GRAND RAPIDS – After winning eight straight MIAA games, the Calvin baseball
team fell to neighboring Grand Valley State University at home on Tuesday,
10-1.

The Knights, who recently climbed into D-III national rankings (No. 23),
notched only three hits throughout in their perennial non-conference match-up
with the No. 16 (D-II) Lakers.

Calvin senior Scott Larsen (1-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season
on the mound, allowing 10 hits and sevens runs in a five-inning stint. Only two
of those runs were earned due to three pivotal errors, which gave way to a pair
of three-run innings for the visiting Lakers.

Grand Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second frame when Matt Nickels
bolted a two-RBI double and Pat Radde followed with an RBI single. The Lakers
would add one more run in the third before Calvin’s Chris Blacklidge knocked
in an RBI single to jut into the GVSU 4-1 lead.

The Lakers erupted for three more runs in the fifth, one more in the eighth,
and tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth to seal the win.

Blacklidge, Matt Schepel and Kyle Gurzynski were the only Knights to record
base hits, as Calvin batted a combined 3 for 29 (.103) from the plate.

Jeff Groenewold threw three innings in relief for Calvin, allowing only two
hits and one run. Chad Epker closed out the game for the Knights in the ninth.

Calvin will host Tri-State University on Thursday, April 10 in a conference
