Marcia Harris Named MIAA Player of the Week in Women's Basketball;
Men's Tennis Team Second at West Michigan Tournament
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin junior cetner Marcia Harris has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women's basketball. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Harris scored 57
points in a pair of close league victories last week.
On Wednesday night, she scored a career-high 32 points in a 65-64 win over Adrian and followed with a 25 point performance in a 71-69 victory over Olivet on Saturday. Her 32-point outburst against Adrian matched the sixth-highest single-game scoring total in Calvin women's basketball history. Of her 32 points, 16 came in the final 5:13 of regulation. In the win over Olivet on Saturday, Harris scored the game-winning basket with four seconds left to break a 69-69 tie. In the games she shot 22-for-38 and was 13-for-18 on free throws. She collected 11 rebounds and had six steals.
Calvin is currently 14-8 overall and 10-5 in the MIAA standings. The Knights have clinched third place in MIAA regular season standings and the third seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. Calvin will close out its regular season on Wednesday with a league game at Tri-State scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
MEN' TENNIS
The Calvin men's tennis team opened its season on Friday and Saturday at hte West Michigan Tournament held at the Orchard Hills Tennis Center. Calvin finished second in a four-team field with a final team score of 10 points. Aquinas won the tournament with 18 points with Calvin second with 10 points, Hope third with nine points and Grand Rapids Community College fourth with one point.
In singles action, Calvin had three flight champions with senior Michael Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 3 singles, sophomore Tim Hewitt (Harbor Springs) winning at No. 7 singles and junior Tim Steenstra (Unity Christian HS) winning at No. 8 singles.
In doubles action, Calvin's tandem of senior Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) and Goorhouse took second at No. 1 doubles while the freshmen duo of Matt and Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) took second at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a match scheduled to be played at Kalamazoo College. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
