MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING DAY ONE RECAP FROM MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

HOLLAND -- At the end of the first day of the three-day MIAA Championship
competition, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team stands in first place
with 228 points while the Calvin men are in fifth place with 76 points. Calvin
women hold an 89 point lead over second place Hope heading into Friday’s
competition.
The women's side was bolstered by four first place finishes. Sophomore Emily
Roberts (Dekalb, IL) took first place in the 200 yard IM with a time of
2:10.08. In the same event, sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS)
finished second in 2:10.66. Both were NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying
times. Junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) won the 50 yard freestyle
in a provisional-qualifying time of 24.22. The 200 yard freestyle relay team
of VanWoerkom, Vail, and seniors Julie Wolfe and Kat Vinson also placed first,
doing so with a provisional-qualifying time of 1:36.68.
From the 3-meter board, junior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) added another
MIAA first-place finish with a Holland Aquatic Center pool record total of
485.20 points. Senior Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third with
425.30 points.
In addition, the women's 400 yard medly relay team of freshman Caitlin
Alexander (Holland Christian HS), Vail, Roberts, and VanWoerkom finished second
with a provisional-qualifying time of 3:58.41.
Top finishes on the men's side came from a fourth-place finish in the 200 yard
freestyle relay, the team of senior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), sophomore
Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Jon Herrema (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) and junior Matt Bolles (West Ottawa HS) finishing in a
time of 1:26.86. Boumgarden also placed fourth in the 50 yard freestyle, tying
Olivet's Brad Voss in 21.37.
Head coach Dan Gelderloos says that the men are "low in numbers this year, so
it's hard to pick a fight." But he looks forward to tomorrow, where the team
will "try to get some things started and swim solid races."
As the women look to carry on the tradition of winning the MIAA Championship
meet, they are led by VanWoerkom's carrying on of the tradition in the 50 meter
freestyle, and even that belonged to alum Becky Weima in previous seasons.
"That's a pretty cool thing for Cara," said Gelderloos. "This is the best meet
she's had in her life."
Deur has also carried on her tradition from the boards and looks to repeat
tonight's win as she looks to the one-meter diving competition. "Erica
continues to impress and perform at the high level. Her consistency is
amazing," Gelderloos said.
In sum, Gelderloos is looking to the women for "hard fought swims" in the next
few days. "We need to continue the momentum. We're ahead by a large margin,
but we can't let our guard down."
Preliminaries begin again tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., and finals are scheduled
for 6 p.m. at the Holland Aquatic Center.
