Derek Griffin Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men's Basketball
For the second time this year and for the fourth time in his Calvin career, Derek Griffin has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball. A native of Whitehall and a graduate of Whitehall High School, Griffin scored 38 points and grabbed 10 rebounds this past week as Calvin picked up conference victories over Olivet and Tri-State to improve to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA.
In an 80-70 victory over Olivet on Wednesday night, Griffin had 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. He followed with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting in a 75-68 win over Tri-State on Saturday afternoon while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
On the week, Griffin was 13-for-24 from the floor including 8-of-16 from three-point range. He was also 4-for-5 on free throws with two blocked shots and an assist.
Griffin is currently averaging 13.8 points and 4.2 rebounds a game while shooting 87.2 percent from the free throw line and 41.8 percent from three-point range.
Calvin returns to action this week with a pair of home contests. The Knights host Alma Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. and Adrian on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
