Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams Fall at Hope;
Deur Sets School Record

HOLLAND -- The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams both dropped MIAA dual meets at rival Hope on Saturday with the men's team falling 163-116 and the women's team falling 154-146.

In the men's meet, Calvin junior Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) was a double-winner, taking first place in both the 500 (4:55.73) and 1,000 freestyle (10:10.17). Sophomore Dennis Steenbergen (Alymer, ON) was also a double-winner for the Knights, taking first place on both the one-meter (205.45) and three-meter (205.40) diving boards. Senior Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA) also won the 100 backstroke (55.13). In addition, Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Gluvers, senior Lucas Seebeck (Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and sophomore Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took first place with a time of 3:39.47.

In the women's meet, senior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) established a new school record on the one-meter diving board, winning with a total of 299.45 points, breaking her own school record by nearly 13 points. Deur also won the three-meter board with a score of 271.25.

Other individual winners for the Calvin women included:

*Sophomore Libby Veldkamp (Calvin Christian HS) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:00.54).

*Sophomore Emily Roberts (Dekalb, IL) in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.69).

*Junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) in the 100 freestyle (54.69).

*Sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.43).

**Both Calvin teams are back in action next Saturday, hosting Alma in MIAA dual meets at 1:00 p.m. at the East Grand Rapids Aquatic Center.
