MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

KALAMAZOO -- Coming off a break that included a week-long training trip in Coral Springs, FL, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in an MIAA dual meet at Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon. Calvin split the meet, the women's team coming away with a 154-103 victory, with the men falling to Kalamazoo 123-147,

On the women's side, Calvin began the meet with a first place finish in the 200 yard medly relay, with freshman Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins), sophomore Emily Roberts (Dekalb, IL/Dekalb), sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage/Portage Northern), and junior Cara VanWoerkom (Wyoming/Calvin Christian) clocking in at 1:53.19. VanWoerkom led Calvin by capturing two individual races, placing in the 50 yard freestyle (25.58) and the 100 yard freestyle (55.76).

Other first place finishes came from sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA/Warren) in the 200 yard freestyle (2:00.26), freshman Brianna VandenEnde (Huntsville, ON/Huntsville) in the 100 yard backstroke (1:04.19), freshman Caitlin Alexander (Holland/Holland Christian) in the 200 yard backstroke (2:17.22), and Vail in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:27.83). Junior Erica Deur (Holland/Holland Christian) led the Calvin divers with 237.20 points in the one-meter dive and 260.60 from the three-meter board.

In the men's competition junior Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) placed first by a margin of three seconds in the 200 yard butterfly, finishing in 2:02.27, and had a large lead in the 500 yard freestyle, again placing first (4:58.35). Senior Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA/Rocklin) took first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:11.14 and, along with teammates sophomore Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), sophomore Jon Herrema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), and senior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL/Naperville North), was part of the 200 yard freestyle relay team that finished first with a time of 1:31.16. Freshman Stephen Kruse (Northville/Northville) took first in both diving events, scoring 228.70 points on the one-meter board and 228.75 from the three-meter.

The teams take a two-week break from competition, their next meet scheduled for Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 at Wayne State.
