All-America Honors
VOLLEYBALL
Two members of Calvin’s nationally-ranked women’s volleyball team have
been named Division III All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches
Association.
Calvin senior Molly Krikke has been named a second team All-American by the
AVCA while senior teammate Katie Zondervan has been named a third team
All-American.
In addition, Calvin senior Kristen Kalb and junior Lauren DeGroot have been
cited as honorable mention All-Americans by the AVCA.
The awards will be presented Nov. 14, 2007, at the NCAA Division III Women’s
National Championship banquet in Bloomington, Ill., where the 2007 Division III
AVCA Player of the Year will be announced.
It marks the second straight year that Calvin has had members of its team
named to the All-America first, second or third teams and it marks the third
time that two Calvin players have been so honored in the same year. Julie
Dykstra, Leah Calsbeek and Roxanne Helmus all received All-America accolades in
1986 while Kristen Kalb and Molly Krikke were named All-Americans in 2006.
Krikke hails from the state of Ohio. She is from the town of Greenwich and is
a graduate of South Central High School. Krikke was also a second team
All-American in 2007. A middle-hitter, the 5-11 Krikke averaged 4.79 kills and
1.15 blocks-per-game this fall while recording a team-leading .319 attack
percentage. Last week, Krikke was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player and
was named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year.
Zondervan is from Lakewood, California. She is a graduate of Valley Christian
High School. A setter, Zondervan averaged 13.79 assists-per-game and was ranked
second nationally in that category heading into NCAA III Tournament play last
week. She also averaged 3.20 digs-per-game and amassed 35 service aces.
Zondervan is Calvin’s career leader in assists (6,498) and is also the Calvin
single-season record holder (1,568). In addition, she holds the Calvin
single-match record for service aces (12). This year, Zondervan chalked up 35
service aces. Zondervan was recently named to the All-MIAA first team for the
fourth straight year. She is one of only five players in MIAA women’s
volleyball history to achieve the feat four straight years.
Kalb is an outside hitter from Stow, Ohio. She is a graduate of Stow-Munroe
Falls High School. Kalb averaged 4.46 kills and 3.19 digs-per-game this year
along with an attack percentage of .243. She was credited with 35 service aces
and 25 blocks during the year. Kalb is Calvin’s career record holder in kills
with 1,934 kills. Her career average for kills-per-game was 3.70. A two-time
first team All-MIAA selection, Kalb was named the MIAA’s MVP in 2006 as well
as a first team AVCA All-American. A standout student, she was also recently
named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV third team.
DeGroot is from Tulare, California. A graduate of Central Valley Christian
High School, DeGroot averaged a team-leading 5.52 digs-per-game from her libero
spot in the back row. She was also credited with 29 service aces and recorded a
reception percentage of .944.
Under the direction of head coach Amber Warners, Calvin recently concluded its
season with a 30-5 overall record after falling in the second round of the NCAA
III Tournament to sixth-ranked Carthage. In finishing 30-5, Calvin reached the
30-win plateau for the third straight year and for the ninth time in school
history.

MEN'S SOCCER CORRECTION
Correction for Nov. 9, 2007 CSR (PART TWO):
(written by Bruce Van Baren '09)
The Nov. 9 CSR's "Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to John Carroll in NCAAs,"
contained incorrect information about senior Dave Fortosis. The lone senior
captain, goal keeper Dave Fortosis (West
Chicago, IL/ Wheaton Academy) was not injured in the fourth game of the year
against Wheaton, but rather midway through the second game of the season
against Carthage. Also, Fortosis did not play JV for his
freshman season as was written, rather only as a sophomore.
As a freshman, Fortosis played in seven games and recorded four shutouts as
the back up goal keeper. As a sophomore, he played as a defensive stopper both
on JV and in one game on varsity. As a junior, Fortosis
earned a starting role in the defensive back field early in the season before
taking over as the starting goal keeper mid way through the season. As a
senior captain, Fortosis finished the season with 1.63
goals against average and a 2-0-1 record.
The Calvin Sports Information department regrets the error in Friday's inital
report.
