Women's Soccer Finishes MIAA Regular Season Unbeaten With Win Over Albion

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Albion 0

ALBION — Calvin freshman Elaine Schnabel picked the perfect time to score
her first collegiate goal, redirecting a free kick from teammate Ashley Bolen
into the net with just 14:37 left in regulation time to lift the Knights to a
1-0 victory at Albion Wednesday afternoon. A native of Chesterton, Indiana,
Schnabel came off the bench on Wednesday to collect three shots including the
game-winning goal late in the second half. Bolen (Urbana, IL) picked up her
sixth assist of the afternoon on the play.

The first half was an even affair with Calvin holding a slim 8-6 shots at goal
advantage. Calvin then cranked up the pressure in the opening moments of the
second half, ringing the goalpost on shots by Carly Prins (Unity Christian HS)
and by Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL). Calvin outshot Albion 17-1 in the
second half and finished the game with an overall shots at goal advantage of
25-7.

Sophomore goalkeepers Alyssa Bergsma (Calvin Christian HS) and Kayla Sulzer
(St. Charles, MO) combined on the shutout in goal for the Knights with Bergsma
posting four saves in the first half and Sulzer one save in the second half.

Calvin has now posted five consecutive shutouts including seven consecutive
shutouts in conference play.

Ranked 19th in the latest Division III Coaches Top-25 poll, Calvin is now
13-3-1 overall and finishes the MIAA regular season with an 8-0-0 mark. Calvin
will host Olivet on Saturday at noon in a first round MIAA Tournament game
which will be aired via RealAudio broadcast at:

The final MIAA crown is a combination of the MIAA regular season season and
the MIAA Tournament. Each MIAA regular season win counts as three points with a
tie one point. A first round MIAA Tournament victory is worth three points, a
win in the semifinals worth six points and a win the championship final worth
nine points. In the event of a penalty kick shootout, the winner of the
shootout receives two-thirds of the placement points with the loser the
remaining third. The team with the most placement points earned from both the
MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament is declared the MIAA champion and
receives the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
