CALVIN FALL SPORTS ATHLETES RECEIVE MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

A trio of Calvin fall sports athletes have received MIAA Player of the Week honors as senior Kristen Kalb has been named MIAA Player of the Week while junior Lauren DeGroot has been named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week. Kalb is receiving MIAA Player of the Week honors for the third time in her career. She hit .469 in a three-game sweep of Adrian last week, recording 19 kills and 10 digs.

Meanwhile, DeGroot chalked up 19 digs in the win over Adrian. She is being honored as MIAA Specialty Player of the Week for the second time this year and for the fourth time in her career. The women's volleyball team is currently 21-3 overall and ranked 15th nationally. The Knights travel to rival Hope on Wednesday night for a key MIAA showdown set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Finally, Calvin junior A.J. Dufendach has been named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer. A midfielder, Dufendach shares the award this week with Hope senior James Trebilock. Dufendach played an instrumental role in leading Calvin to shutout victories over Tri-State and Kalamazoo last week with the Knights defeating Tri-State 2-0 and Kalamazoo 3-0. Calvin is currently atop the MIAA standings with a 7-1-0 conference record and will carry a seven-game win streak into a rivalry game at Hope on Wednesday set to begin at 4:00 p.m.

The Calvin-Hope men's soccer and Calvin-Hope volleyball matches will both be aired via RealAudio on Wednesday. In addition, the women's soccer team will host Olivet on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. That match will also be aired via RealAudio broadcast at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/ram/calvinsports.ram

MEN'S/WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS RECEIVE PRE-SEASON RANKINGS/PRE-SEASON HONORS

The Calvin men's and women's basketball teams have both received pre-season national rankings. The Calvin men's basketball team is ranked 13th in the pre-season Top-25 poll released by DIII News - the monthly newsletter of Division III men's basketball. The Calvin women's basketball team is ranked seventh by Women's DIII News - the monthly newsletter of Division III women's basketball.

Washington University of St. Louis is the pre-season number-one team in the DIII News Top-25 poll. The Bears return four starters from a team that reached the NCAA III Final Four last year. Washington University will also travel to Calvin for the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament November 16 and 17. Calvin will open the tournament against Grace Bible College on November 16 while Washington University will face Ohio Northern in the other first round game.

Individually, Calvin junior guard Caleb Veldhouse of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been named a pre-season All-American. A year ago, Veldhouse averaged 15.0 points a game and earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team. Heading into the 2007-08 season, he is 160 points away from reaching the 1,000 point plateau for his collegiate career. In addition, Veldhouse has also received pre-season honorable mention All-America honors from the Sporting News/Street & Smith's pre-season basketball issue.

A year ago, the Calvin men finished 19-10 overall, won the MIAA Tournament title and reached the NCAA III Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

On the women's side, Capital University (OH) is the top-ranked team in the WDIII News Top-25 poll. Individually, Calvin junior Marcia Harris of Grand Rapids Christian High School has been a pre-season honorable mention All-American. A 6-1 forward, Harris averaged 15.8 points a game and earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year. Heading into the 2007-08 season, she is 187 points away from reaching the 1,000 point plateau for her career.

The Calvin women's basketball team is scheduled to open its season on November 16 at a tournament hosted by the College of Mount St. Joseph. Calvin will take on Illinois College in a first round game with Mount St. Joseph taking on St. Joseph's College of New York in the other first round game.

A year ago, Calvin finished 28-3 overall, won the MIAA regular season title and advanced to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament.
