Volleyball Team Opens Millikin Tournament With Pair of Victories

DECATUR, IL -- Calvin picked up a pair of victories on the opening day of competition at the Millikin University Fall Ball Invitational, defeating Franklin (IN) 30-26, 30-19, 30-21 and 21st-ranked Central College (IA) 30-23, 21-30, 30-22, 30-28.

Ranked 15th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll and third in the first Great Lakes Regional poll of the year, Calvin is now 19-3 overall. The Knights are scheduled to take on host Millikin University as well as Fontbonne (MO) University on Saturday. Millikin also opened the tournament with a pair of victories including a five-game win over Central College.

In the win over Franklin Friday night, senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) led the way with 16 kills and an attack percentage of .571.Freshman Kim Wigboldy (Scottsdale, AZ) also had a big match with 16 kills and a .324 attack percentage. Senior setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) had 30 assists while junior Jessica Garlick (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and junior Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN) both had seven block assists. Junior Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 16 digs while freshman setter Carolyn Nelson (Milan) chipped in with 13 assists.

The win over Central College marked Calvin's second win of the year against a nationally-ranked opponent. Senior middle-hitter Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) was the catalyst behind the Calvin win with 17 kills and an attack percentage of .366. She was one of four Calvin players to notch double-digits in kills as Kramer had 12 kills, Garlick 11 kills and Kalb 10 kills. Garlick posted a team-best .435 attack percentage and added four block assists. Sophomore Kelsey Sears (Traverse City West HS) added three service aces and 15 digs while DeGroot had 22 digs and Zondervan 54 assists.

Saturday's competition is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. (CST) with Calvin facing Millikin. Calvin will then meet Fontbonnne at 1:00 p.m. (CST).
