ALBION -- Calvin stretched its win streak to four games and remained in a share of first place in the MIAA standings with an important 1-0 victory at Albion Wednesday afternoon. Calvin entered the afternoon locked in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings with Albion and Kalamazoo. The Knights (6-4-1 overall, 4-1-0 MIAA) are now tied with Kalamazoo for first place in the MIAA as Kalamazoo defeated Adrian 3-0 on Wednesday to also move to 4-1-0 in conference action.
Calvin has now won five of its last six games with all five victories coming by way of shutout. In fact, Calvin has allowed just one goal over its last 555 minutes of play. Calvin junior goalkeeper Darrin Cline (Grandville HS) has played a big role in Calvin's strong defensive run as the first-year starter now has a season goals-against-average of 0.47 and is currently ranked among the nation's leaders in goals-against-average.
Cline was in top form again on Wednesday, posting a pair of saves and his fourth shutout victory of the season. Cline's biggest save came in the 68th minute with the Knights clinging to a one-goal lead. A shot by Albion's Jordan Matthews appeared headed for the top corner of the goal but Cline was able to flick it just over the crossbar to keep Calvin on top.
Albion's Mark Feger also had a dangerous scoring attempt in the final six minutes of play but was thwarted by the Calvin defense.
The only goal of the game came in the 33rd minute as freshman Kurt VanSickel (Pittsburgh, PA) was able to redirect a corner kick taken by senior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) into the back of the net. The goal was VanSickel's second of the year and the first game-winning goal of his career.
Calvin finished with a 9-8 shots at goal advantage. Albion goalkeeper Jordan Thomas had five saves for the Britons (4-5-0 overall, 3-2-0 MIAA)
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Adrian for a 2:00 p.m. contest. The game will be broadcast via RealAudio through the Calvin web site at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/ram/calvinsports.ram

GRAND RAPIDS -- Playing in its third game in five days, Calvin (7-3-1 overall, 3-0-0) fought off fatigue on Wednesday in defeating visiting Adrian 6-0 at Zuidema Field. Calvin scored three goals in each half and received strong goalkeeping from sophomores Alyssa Bergsma (Calvin Christian HS) and Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO) to stretch its winning streak to five games.
Freshman Carly Prins (Unity Christian HS) scored a pair of goals for Calvin in the opening 10 minutes of play to give the Knights the early momentum. Prins now has a team-leading eight goals on the year. Sophomore Natalie Veurink (Western Michigan Christian HS) put Calvin up 3-0 on a goal in the 18th minute of play on a pretty crossing feed up front by senior Leah Scholten (Unity Christian HS).
In the second half, junior Michelle Koele (Denver, CO) scored her second and third goals of the year less than two minutes apart to put Calvin on top 5-0. Junior Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL) closed out the scoring with her sixth goal of the year, scoring on a feed from sophomore Mindy Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) in the 69h minute of play.
Ribbens also picked up a pair of assists on the afternoon while freshman Kellie Honderd (Unity Christian HS) assisted on Koele's first goal.
In three MIAA games, Calvin has outscored the opposition 22-1. Calvin finished Wednesday's game with a 20-9 shots at goal advantage. Adrian (4-7-0 overall, 1-2-0 MIAA) did come up with a handful of quality scoring chances however with Bergsma picking up three saves in the first half while Sulzer had one key save in the second half on an Adrian breakaway attempt.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to cross-town to non-conference rival Aquinas for a game slated to start at noon. Aquinas will bring an 11-1-0 record into the Saturday tilt with the Saints suffering their first defeat of the year on Wednesday, falling to Siena Heights 2-1.
Aquinas is coached by former Olivet head coach Mark Fales who helped lead the Comets to an NCAA III Tournament berth in 1998.

KALAMAZOO -- The nationally-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team received a major scare on Wednesday night as it held off the upset bid of the Kalamazoo College Hornets, winning in a five-game marathon 23-30, 27-30, 30-19, 30-18, 15-6. The host Hornets (6-11 overall, 3-7 MIAA) appeared poised to snap Calvin's streak on Wednesday night but a comeback effort by the Knights averted the upset. Senior middle-hitter Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) had a monster effort up front for Calvin with a career-high 28 kills along with three aces, two blocks and a .348 hitting percentage.
Senior outside hitter Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) also had a career-high 31 digs along with 19 kills. Calvin's back row was busy in the five-game match as junior Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 27 digs and sophomore Kelsey Sears (Traverse City West HS) 19 digs.
Calvin hit just .186 as a team and committed an unchararacteristic 16 service errors in the match.
