MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 4, Olivet 0

OLIVET -- After defeating rival Hope 1-0 on Saturday, the question hanging over the Knights was whether they would use the victory as a momentum booster or would it be a letdown. Based on the results of Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Olivet Comets, Saturday's win appears to have been a momentum booster as the Knights posted their first back-to-back wins of the year, improving to 4-4-1 overall and more importantly, to 2-1-0 in conference play, remaining three points behind league-leading Kalamazoo (3-0-0) which won at Alma 3-1 on Tuesday.

Calvin scored a pair of goals in each half against the host Comets to cruise to the win. The Knights swarmed the Olivet goal early on, peppering the Comet goalkeeper with eight shots in the opening 12 minutes. Calvin broke through for the first goal of the game in the 26th minute of play as junior A.J. Dufendach (Forest Hills Northern HS) whipped in a right-footed blast off a feed from sophomore Blake VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Calvin then took a 2-0 lead on a late first half goal by junior Ben Buehrle (Tri-unity Christian HS) with junior Anthony Gratson (Rochester Stoney Creek HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Freshman Kurt VanSickel () then picked up his first collegiate goal in the 64th minute of play, redirecting a corner kick by freshman teammate Kyle Billin (Unity Christian HS) into the net. Buehrle added his second goal of the game in the 79th minute, converting a feed from sophomore Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Calvin outshot Olivet 30-7 including 17-3 in the opening half. Juniors Darrin Cline (Grandville HS) and Luke Panacassio (Sydney, Australia) combined on the shutout in goal for the Knights. Ethan Felsing had eight saves in defeat for Olivet.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Alma for a 2:00 p.m. contest

Calvin d. St. Mary's 30-15, 30-23, 30-25

NOTRE DAME -- Ranked 15th nationally in the latest Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll, Calvin pulled out a three-game victory over host St. Mary's (6-8, 3-4 MIAA) this evening to continue its undeafeated streak in MIAA play. Calvin (11-3, 6-0 MIAA) remains in first place in the league and looks to continue on that momentum through this week in which it will play two more conference matches.

The dominance of the Calvin offense which had 51 kills and the strength of the Calvin defense, which allowed St. Mary's only 28 kills while amassing 68 digs, gave the Knights a fairly smooth victory in the first two games, 30-15 and 30-23, and carried through for Calvin in the closer 30-25 third-game win.

Senior setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian), recently named the MIAA Specialty Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career, leads the league in assists-per-game (14.30) and is also among the nation's leaders. Zondervan dished out 43 assists tonight and had 9 digs.

Turning Zondervan's sets into Calvin points were senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) with 17 kills and 12 digs and senior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central) with 16 kills. Junior Jessica Garlick (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian) and sophomore Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) also assisted the offense with 8 and 6 kills, respectively.

Junior libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) led the defense with 17 digs, sophomore Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West) added 12 digs, and senior Sarah Ernst (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) had 11 digs.

St. Mary's Lorna Slupczynski had 11 kills and 9 digs and Kaela Hellman added 8 kills and 15 digs, leading the Belles in defeat.

Calvin returns home on Wednesday for a 6:30 match against conference opponent Alma. On Friday, September 28, Calvin will again be on the road, playing a 6:30 match at Albion.

WOMEN'S GOLF

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Calvin women's golf team competed in the third MIAA Jamboree of the season and ended with a 7th place finish. The golfers had a very long day on the course as weather delays prolonged the competition. Calvin stands in 7th place in the conference going into the tournament schedule.

The Olivet women's team, who has placed first in each Jamboree this season, had an impressive team finish of 324 combined strokes, placing all five competitors in the top six. The medalist was Hope's Julie Hoogerhyde with a final 74 (37+37), one above par for the course. In effect, Hope took a second place team finish, a place held by St. Mary's in the previous Jamborees of the season.

Calvin's combined score of 389 included a tie for seventeenth place by sophomore Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) with 89 strokes (45+44). The other team contributions came from sophomore Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) who placed 34th with 96 strokes (46+50), senior Linnea Trippet (White Plains, NY/White Plains) who was 39th with 100 strokes (49+51), sophomore Julienne Louters (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) who tied for 42nd place with 104 strokes (51+53), and senior Erin Kammers (Belding/Belding) with 118 strokes (62+56), good for 50th place.

On Saturday Calvin is scheduled to compete in the Siena Heights Invitational at the Tecumseh Country Club with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
