KENOSHA, WI – A late first half Concordia- Meq. (WI) goal kept the Knights
from notching their second straight win to open the season in the Carthage
Tournament. The tying goal may have also cost Calvin its starting goal keeper
as Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) left the game with an
injury.
With less than three minutes remaining and Calvin protecting a 2-1 lead
nearing halftime, Fortosis, sophomore Zach Dipalo (Silver Lake, OH/Cuyahoga
Valley Christian Academy) and Concordia’s Brian Noord challenged for a cross
in the box. Fortosis and Dipalo collided and Noord, who missed the brunt of
the collision, was left with an easy shot, tying the game at 2-2 with 2:13
remaining in the first half. Fortosis immediately left the game.
Concordia opened up the scoring with a goal in the fifteenth minute of play.
Senior midfielder Jared Litty (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) stepped up huge for the
Knights feeding freshman Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/ Unity Christian) in the
twentieth minute to tie the game 1-1 and then fed senior Nick Capisciolto in
the thirtieth minute to given Calvin a 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, Calvin was able to keep the Carthage’s two biggest
threats, captaings Noord and Dent, in check, but also lost a step themselves
offensively as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Calvin
finished with 14 shots, eight of which were in the first half and Concordia
finished with 11 shots, seven of which came in the first half. Fortosis
finished with three saves and junior Darrin Cline (Grandville/ Grandville), who
took over in goal when Fortosis left in the first half after the collision with
Dipalo, allowed zero goals and recorded no saves.
With the tie Calvin moves to 1-0-1 on the season as the Knights topped host
Carthage College 4-1 on Friday. Calvin will host North Park on Friday at 4:00
pm and the game will be broadcast via Real Player at Calvin.edu/sports.
