KENOSHA,WI -- The Knights began their 2007 campaign on the right foot, defeating host Carthage College 4-1 on Friday afternoon. Senior Jared Litty (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) and junior Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) went 2-for-2 as the Calvin defense held Carthage (0-1) scoreless until the final ten minutes of play.
Neither team held a significant shooting advantage, with Calvin edging Carthage 15-14 in total shots, and it was three-fourths of the way through the first half that one of those shots found the back of the net. On an assist from senior Nick Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian), Holwerda came off the bench to score the first goal of the season in the 32nd minute of play. Calvin led 1-0 at the half.
The next two goals were also Calvin's, both scored by Litty with assists from junior Anthony Gratson (Rochester/Rochester Stoney Creek) and Holwerda at the 6:27 and 24:55 marks, respectively. Carthage's lone point came with less than ten minutes to play, a goal by Greg Goldsberry off a cross from Chris Fidlow.
Holwerda earned his second goal of the season less than four minutes later with an unassisted breakaway shot that got past Carthage keeper Andrew Connor. Conner had eight saves during the match-up while Calvin keeper Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) had seven. Leading Calvin in shots was freshman Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian).
Calvin continues play in the "Battle on the Border" at Carthage, facing Concordia-Mequon (Wisc.) Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Central Time.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Kenyon 2, Calvin 1
GAMBIER, OH -- A 2-1 loss to Keyon College (1-0) this afternoon broke a string of 27 undefeated games that dates back to the 2005 season. The streak included two losses in NCAA Division III Tournament games that ended in shoot-outs, which are recorded as ties. Calvin's last regular season loss was another 2-1 decision against Hope on October 26, 2005. The Knights ended last season with a 22-0-1 record that included a 1-0 victory over Kenyon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Keyon was quick to put themselves on the board as Amanda Drummond scored an unassisted goal at the 3:02 mark. It was not until the 37th minute of play that Calvin was able to answer with a goal of its own. Sophomore Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian) found a way past Kenyon keeper Rosie Davis, who had four saves in the game. The score was tied 1-1 at the half.
Again striking early, Drummond managed another goal in the first twenty seconds of the second half. She led the team with four shots. This time, Calvin was unable to strike back, and Kenyon took the victory.
Calvin keeper sophomore Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian) had three saves. Both Calvin and Kenyon had nine total shots. Three of Calvin's shots came from freshman Mindy Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian).
The Knights remain in Ohio to face the College of Mount St. Joseph at Denison University, which is hosting the other half of the tournament. The game is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
