CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 21, 2007 (PART TWO)
LISA WINKLE NAMED TO SPORTS ILLUSTRATED'S FACES IN THE CROWD & NAMED ONE OF 10 FINALISTS FOR NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
One week prior to starting her high school teaching career, recent Calvin College graduate Lisa Winkle has added two more lofty honors to her portfolio. Winkle, who will begin teaching at her high school alma mater South Christian High School next Monday as a math teacher, has been named to Sports Ilustrated's notable "Faces in the Crowd" section in this week's issue.
In addition, Winkle has been named one of 30 nationwide finalists for the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Winkle's "Faces in the Crowd" citation can be found on-line at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/scorecard/faces/2007/08/27/ and will also be in issues set to hit newstands nationwide later this week. Winkle's bio lists her as Calvin's all-time leading scorer and rebounder in women's basketball, the recipient of the 2007 Josten's Trophy and as a seven-time NCAA III All-American in track and field. At the time of her nomination for "Faces in the Crowd", Winkle was a seven-time NCAA III All-American in track and field but finished her career as a ten-time NCAA III All-American with three more berths at the 2007 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Winkle is the second Calvin athlete in the last three years to be honored in "Faces in the Crowd" as swimmer Becky Weima was so honored in March of 2006.
Meanwhile, Winkle will also prepare to attend the NCAA's Woman of the Year ceremony October 27 in Indianapolis. Winkle is one of 30 finalists for the prestigious honor out of more than 120 conference nominees nationwide with nominations coming in from all three NCAA (I, II & III) divisions. Winkle is one 10 Division III finalists, along with 10 finalists from Division II and 10 finalists from Division I. The top three finalists per division will be announced in September. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on October 27.
Nominees are selected based on service and leadership activities, academic achievement, athletics excellence, and a personal statement describing benefits she has gained from her experience as a student-athlete.
To be eligible for this honor, the female student-athlete must have earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and competed during the 2006-07 academic year. As well, each individual must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2007 spring season and must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5.
