WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM IN PRE-SEASON TOP 10 OF TWO NATIONAL POLLS;
JIM DETERS UPDATE
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin women's soccer team will open the 2007 season ranked in the top 10 of two national polls. The Knights are ranked fifth in the first National Soccer Coaches Association of America's first Top-25 national poll and ranked sixth in the D3kicks.com pre-season Top-25 poll.

Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, Calvin finished 22-0-1 in 2006, reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin returns six starters and 14 letterwinners from last year's team.
Calvin opens its season on August 31 when it faces Kenyon College on the road in a rematch of a first round 2006 NCAA III Tournament game with Calvin winning the 2006 encounter by a 1-0 score.
Calvin's non-conference schedule this year includes three teams currently in the national rankings. Calvin will face top-ranked Wheaton (IL) on September 8 and 25th-ranked Chicago on September 7. Calvin is also scheduled to travel to 23rd-ranked DePauw University on October 1.
JIM DETERS UPDATE
KINSTON, NC -- The beat goes on for 2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters in his third year of professional baseball. Deters is in the midst of a four-game win streak for the Kinston Indians - an advanced Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Deters is currently 10-3 on the year with a 2.00 earned run average. Since moving into the starting rotation for Kinston on July 24, Deters has posted four victories without a loss and allowed just three earned runs in 29 innings of work. During the stretch, Deters has struck out 18 batters, walked just seven.
Deters is one of four pitchers on the Kinston staff to have posted 10 victories this year. He leads the Kinston pitching staff in earned run average and has an impressive walks-and-hits-to-innings pitched (WHIP) ratio of 1.09. He has struck out 58 batters in 94.1 innings of work and walked only 18.

Also a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters is scheduled to take the mound tonight as a starter in a matchup against the Potomac Nationals at 7:00 p.m.
The Kinston Indians have already qualified for the Carolina League playoffs scheduled to begin in early September. Kinston took first place in the Carolina Leagues southern division standings during the first half of the season with a 45-24 mark and are currently in first place of the southern division during the second half at 34-22.
At 79-46 overall, Kinston has the second-best overall record in all of minor league baseball.
