CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 4, 2007

JIM DETERS UPDATE

KINSTON, NC -- Jim Deters just might be pitching the best baseball of his young professional career as of late. A 2005 Calvin College graduate, Deters has posted back-to-back victories since moving into the starting rotation for the Kinston Indians a week ago. On Friday night, Deters gained the win in a 7-2 victory over the visiting Lynchburg Hillcats. Also a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters allowed just two hits and one run over seven innings of work in upping his overall record to 8-3 while lowering his season earned run average to 2.13. At one point of the game on Friday night, Deters retired 13 consecutive batters. He also struck out five batters and did not allow a hit after the third inning.

Deters also picked up the victory in a 2-0 win as a starter on July 29 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. In the victory, Deters tossed seven shutout innings, striking out six without a walk and allowed just four hits.

Since entering the starting rotation, Deters (8-3) has tossed 19 innings in three starts, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. In five total starts this season, Deters is 3-0 with a 1.17 earned run average. Overall, Deters has allowed just 79 hits in 84.1 innings of work and has a strong walks-to-hits-to-innings (WHIP) pitched ratio of 1.09. He has struck out 52 batters and walked just 13. He also has three "holds" coming out of the bullpen along with one save.

Earlier this year, Deters made an appearance in the Carolina/California Advanced Class A All-Star game and struck out the only batter he faced. He was also called up for an emergency appearance in one game for the Triple A Buffalo Bison - the top farm team of the Cleveland Indians.

The Kinston Indians are an Advanced Class A affilliate of the Cleveland Indians competing in the Carolina League. The defending Carolina League champions, the Kinston Indians are currently 70-38 this year including a 25-14 mark in the second half which puts the Indians on top of the Carolina League southern division. Kinston captured the southern division first half title with an impressive 45-24 mark. Kinston has already qualified for the Carolina League post-season playoffs.
