Eight Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award;
117 Calvin Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll
CALVIN TEAMS RECEIVE MIAA TEAM GPA AWARD
GRAND RAPIDS -- Eight Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA
Team GPA Award. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of
the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a
3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2006-07
academic year. Calvin teams that earned the award for the 2006-07 academic year
include the men's and women's cross country teams, the women’s track and
field team, the men’s tennis team, the women’s basketball team, the
women’s softball team, the women’s swimming and diving team and the
women’s volleyball team.
This is the ninth year the award has been presented. Calvin had eight of the
54 MIAA teams that earned the award, matching Albion for the school with the
most teams so honored.
Of special note, the Calvin women’s cross country team earned the award for
the ninth consecutive year, joining the Adrian women’s track and field,
Albion women’s tennis and Hope women’s cross country team as one of four
squads that have received the award all nine years of its existence.
Calvin’s highest ranking team in terms of cumulative grade point average was
its women’s track and field team. Led by head coach Jong-il Kim, the
women’s track and field team posted a 3.493 grade point average to rank
13th among the list of MIAA teams so honored. The women’s track and field
team has now picked up the award six times in nine years including three years
in a row.
Led by first-year head coach Brian Diemer, the women’s cross country team
was next on the Calvin list with a 3.458 grade point average. Diemer also
placed his men’s cross country team on the honor list with a 3.314 grade
point average, marking the third team that the team achieved the feat.
John Ross also had both his women’s basketball and men’s tennis teams on
the list once again as the men’s tennis team picked up the award for the
third straight year, posting a 3.438 grade point average while the women’s
basketball team took the honor for the third straight year and for the fourth
time overall, collecting a team grade point average of 3.391.
Under the direction of head coach Deb Bakker, the women’s softball team
picked up the award for the second straight year, posting a 3.390 grade point
average. Led by head coach Dan Gelderloos, the women’s swimming and diving
team also picked up the honor for the second time in three years, accumulating
a grade point average of 3.387.
In addition, the women’s volleyball team led by head coach Amber Warners
picked up the award for the fifth time, recording a team grade point average of
3.357
MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL ANNOUNCED
The 2006-07 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic
Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 117 Calvin
scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5
grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2006-07 academic year.
A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible.
The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize
students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the
classroom.
This year's Honor Roll includes 69 students who achieved the distinction four
consecutive years. Of the 69 students, 16 were from Calvin.
The 16 Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a
fourth straight year were seniors Noel Berghuis (Hudsonville, Mich./ soccer),
Lauren Colyn (Battle Creek, Mich./track and field), Harrison Jorritsma
(Beamsville, ON/cross country), Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH, ON/volleyball and track
& field), Camille Medema (Grand Rapids, Mich./cross country), Laura Rooks
(Holland, Mich./soccer), Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/cross country & track and
field), David Sneller (Sheboygan, WI/tennis), Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden,
WA/tennis), Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids.Mich./basketball & track and field),
Becky Weima (Caledonia, Mich./swimming & diving), Melissa Vanden Berg (Grand
Rapids, Mich./cross country & track and field), Dan Volkema (Spring Lake,
Mich./tennis), Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo, Mich./women’s soccer) and Kelly
Zwier-Janke (Kalamazoo, Mich./track & field).
