Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Close Out Competition at Gregory
Invitational Last-Chance Meet
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams sought one
"last chance" at qualifying for next week's national meet by competition at the
North Central College Gregory Invitational Thursday and Friday.
Over the two days of competition, Calvin came up with a handful of NCAA III
provisional and automatic qualifying performances. On the men's side, junior
Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) came up with a career-best and NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 14.75 in the 110 high hurdles Friday night,
winning the event in the process. McClelland's time will put him right on the
bubble for qualifying for next week's national meet. In the 400 meter hurdles,
McClelland missed a provisional qualifying mark, clocking in with a time of
55.16. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Dan VandenAkker (South Christian
HS) had a career-best time of 9:28.08 but just missed a provisional qualifying
time. Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Brad Stroner (Lakewood, CO),
senior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) and juniors Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) and Joel
Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) also clocked a season-best and NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 3:15.84 that will likely not be good enough to
qualify for the national meet.
On the women's side, senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) came up with a career-best
and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 131-4 that puts her right on the
bubble for qualifying. Kalb's throw came on her sixth and final attempt of
Thursday's javelin competition. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, freshman
Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) had a career-best and NCAA III provisional
qualifying time of 10:54.96. The time will likely not be good enough to send
Smit on to the national meet however. In the 100 meter hurdles, junior Sarah
Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) won with a time of 14.44. Wittingen then
joined teammates Jourdan Johnson (Gales Ferry, CT), Heather Koning (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) and Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) to win the 4x400 meter relay
with an NCAA III automatic qualifying and season-best time of 3:45.57.
In addition, sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) had a provisional
qualifying time of 2:11.82 in the 800 meters.
Other notables included freshman Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
unleashing a collegiate-best throw of 132-1 in the discus that was good for
fourth place; sophomore Jesi Hale (Rehoboth Christian HS) clocking a
career-best time of 18:00.34 in the 5,000 meters; senior Megann VanderVliet
(Oakville, ON) winning the shot put (43-10) and senior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) winning the high jump (5-4 1/2). In the 3,000 meter steeplechase,
senior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) had a provisional qualifying time of
11:12.19 while sophomore Anne Fennema (Brookfield, WI) had a career-best time
of 11:48.89.
The official fields for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships will
