MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD REPORT FROM NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE DR. KEELER
INVITE
NAPERVILLE, IL -- A weekend last-chance meet at the North Central College Dr.
Keeler Invitational proved fruitful for the Calvin men's and women's track and
field teams as several individuals posted NCAA III automatic and provisional
qualifying performances.
On the women's side, Calvin senior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) came up
with a moster performance on Friday, winning the long jump with an NCAA III
automatic qualifying and career-best jump of 19-2. Winkle then delivered a
sterling performance in the 400 meters, winning the event with an NCAA III
automatic qualifying and career-best time of 54.81. In winning the race, Winkle
finished ahead of defending national champion Rachel Anderson of Illinois
Wesleyan who placed second in a time of 55.35. Winkle's time is the fastest 400
meter time in NCAA III women's outdoor track and field this spring.
Junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) also had a sensational Friday
evening, second in the 100 meter hurdles with an NCAA III automatic qualifying
time of 14.39 and then winning the 400 meter hurdles with a school record and
NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:00.64, breaking the previous Calvin
record of 1:00.70 set by Laura Hamilton in 2004. Wittingen's 400 meter hurdles
time is the fastest in NCAA III women's track and field this spring.
Freshman Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) also turned in a season-best
time of 58.80 in finishing 10th in the 400 meters (open).
In the 1,500 meters, sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) picked up a
strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 4:34.59 in the 1,500 meters.
Bergstrom already owns an automatic qualifying time in the 800 meters.
In the 5,000 meters, junior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA/Bellevue Christian
HS) continued her strong track and field campaign, taking second with a
provisional qualifying time of 17:01.38. Overbeck already owns an automatic
qualifying time in the event.
The meet was a good one for natives of the state of Washington as Calvin
freshman Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA/Bellevue Christian HS) was eighth with an
NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:01.96.
In the throws, senior Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) was fourth in the shot
put (42-7 1/2) and third in the discus (137-6) while senior Kristen Kalb (Stow,
OH) was fourth in the javelin (123-6).
On the men's side, senior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) had a provisional
qualifying time of 1:52.62 in placing fifth in the 800 meters. In the 5,000
meters, sophomore Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) and junior Tad Hulst
(Zeeland HS) both picked up NCAA III provisional qualifying times with
Christiansen finishing eighth (14:39.53) and Hulst finishing 11th (14:44.10).
The time by Hulst was a season-best.
The effort of the meet for the Calvin men however was turned in by sophomore
Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) who shaved 10 seconds off his personal best in
the 3,000 meter steeplechase, finishing sixth with a strong NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 9:12.95. Junior teammate Dan VandenAkker (South
Christian HS) also had a career-best time of 9:36.41 in the race.
The Calvin track and field teams will now have one more week in an attempt to
qualify more individuals for the national meet, scheduled for May 24-26 at the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Calvin senior Eric DeVries (Unity Christian
HS) will compete in the two-day North Central College Gregory
Multi-Invitational May 15 & 16 with a host of Calvin athletes then competing at
another last-chance meet hosted by North Central on May 17 and 18.
