CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 9, 2007
Andy Draayer Named MIAA Co-Pitcher of the Week;
Jim Deters Update
BASEBALL
For the first time in his career, Calvin senior Andy Draayer has been named
MIAA Pitcher of the Week. A native of Denver, Colorado, Draayer is sharing the
award for the final week of the 2007 season with Albion's John Fileccia. A
graduate of Denver Christian High School, Draayer came up with a pair of
shutout victories in a season-ending four-game series with Tri-State. On
Friday, Draayer threw a five-hitter in a 7-0 shutout at Tri-State, striking out
eight and walking none. He then combined with Kyle Cousins on a four-hit
shutout in a 9-0 win over Tri-State yesterday at Calvin Field. Pitching on just
three days rest, Draayer went five innings in the win, striking out two and
walking one. Draayer finished his 2007 MIAA campaign with a 5-1 record and a
3.70 earned run average. He finished tie for third in the final MIAA standings
in pitching victories and second in innings pitched (48.2).
Calvin swept a doubleheader from Tri-State yesterday to finish its MIAA
campaign at 15-13 and in fourth place in the final league standings.
JIM DETERS UPDATE
2005 Calvin graduate Jim Deters recently moved within one rung of the Major
League level when he was called up to the Triple A Buffalo Bison - the top farm
affiliate for the Cleveland Indians - for a spot start in a game against the
Pawtucket Red Sox on May 5. Deters was called up from the Kinston Indians of
the High Single A level to (re)start the resumption of a game that had been
suspended after one inning back on April 23. Entering in the top of the second
with the games resumption on May 5, Deters went three innings, allowed five
hits and five runs and struck out five batters while issuing four walks.
Trailing 14-6, Buffalo later mounted an incredible comeback with nine runs in
the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 15-14 victory.

Deters has since been returned to the Kinston Indians. Projected long-term by
Cleveland as a middle reliever and spot starter, Deters is currently 1-2 on the
year with Kinston with a 3.38 earned run average. With Kinston, he has struck
out seven batters and not issued a walk. The up-to-date bio on Deters can be
