KENTWOOD - The Knights split a pair of extra inning games with the visiting
Belles of St. Mary's on a chilly afternoon at Calvin's Gainey Complex. Calvin
suffered a 2-1 loss in game one after tying it up in the seventh but in the
second game, scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth before holding
the Belles in the bottom of the inning for the 4-3 victory.

In game one, St. Mary's attacked first scoring a run in the top of the first
inning collecting a couple of hits. The Knights were held scoreless by Belles
pitcher Calli Davison until the seventh inning when Samantha Ehlert
(Rockford/Rockford) connected on a one out double lined to right center and
then came around and scored off of a clutch two out double by Loren Scarbrough
(Antioch, IL/North Suburban Lake).

But the Knights comeback was stopped short when St. Mary's came right back in
the first extra inning scoring a run to regain its lead. The Knights threatened
in the bottom half with a pair of singles--one by Erin Conrad
(Grandville/Calvin Christian) and the other by Cori VanKoevering
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian)--but fell short unable to knock any runs in.

Davison picked up the win for the Belles with a strong eight inning performance
allowing only one run off of five hits while Leah VanEnk (Portage/Kalamazoo
Christian) suffered the loss dropping her record to 3-5 as she allowed two runs
off of six hits in eight innings of work.

In the second game St. Mary's once again struck first. The Belles built a 1-0
lead in the second inning while adding another one in the third to go up 2-0.
Kristin Amran for the Belles appeared to have Calvin's number as she began the
game striking out the side and had the no-hitter up until the fourth inning.

The Knights got on the board in the fourth when after Conrad walked to lead the
inning and advanced to second base on a passed ball, VanKoevering doubled to
right center knocking in Conrad and cutting St. Mary's lead in half.

Calvin did more damage in the fifth scoring two more runs to grab its first
lead of the afternoon at 3-2. With two outs, Amanda Johnson (Grand Rapids)
walked before Ruth Diemer (McBain/McBain Northern Michigan Christian) batted
her in with a double hit to left center. Diemer then came around to score off
of a wild pitch somehow sidestepping and avoiding the tag at home plate.

But St. Mary's wasn't done. In the seventh inning, the Belles tied the game at
3 runs apiece and sent the game once again into extra innings. This time,
however, it was the Knights who scored first and then who held on for the win.
After Conrad walked in the eighth inning, she stole second putting herself in
scoring position. Conrad advanced to third on a Brittany Moriarity
(Muskegon/Mona Shores) groundout and then scored the go ahead and game winning
run off of a VanEnk bloop single to shallow left field. The Knights then held
on putting the Belles down in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the
4-3 victory.

VanEnk was credited with the win improving her record to 4-5 after pitching the
final two innings allowing one run off of one hit while Kristin Folkerts (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) went the first six innings allowing six hits and
two unearned runs. Kristin Amran for St. Mary's was given the loss.

The Knights (5-9 overall, 1-1 MIAA) will return to action on Thursday when it
hosts conference foe Adrian in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 in the
afternoon.
