NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY THREE REPORT
HOUSTON, TX -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team posted its
highest-ever national finish, placing fourth at the NCAA III Swimming and
Diving Championships at the University of Houston with a team total of 251
points. Calvin finished 12 points ahead of fifth place Denison and 10 points
behind third place Emory (GA). Kenyon (OH) captured the national title with 498
points while Amherst (MA) was second with 290 points.
Calvin came up with three All-America finishes and one honorable mention
All-America effort on Saturday night to take home a top-four national trophy
for the first time in school history.
Senior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) closed out her incredible Calvin
career with a pair of All-America swims on Saturday, taking third in the 100
freestyle (51.16) and then swimming a leg on Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team
that posted a third place place and school record time of 3:28.04. Weima was
joined on the relay by juniors Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) and Kat Vinson
(Kaneohe, HI) and freshman Katie White (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Weima finishes her collegiate career as a 22-time NCAA III All-American
including a 12-time NCAA III All-American in individual events.
After winning a national title on the one-meter board on Thursday night,
sophomore Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) took home a national runner-up
berth on the three-meter diving board with a total of 476.10 points. Doria
Holbrook of M.I.T. took first with a total of 480.90 points. Deur is now a
four-time NCAA III All-American.
Calvin also received points on Saturday from senior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth,
OH) who took 13th in the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:22.94.
"Our goal before the season was a top-four national finish so it feels very
satisfying to reach that goal," said Calvin women's swimming and diving coach
Dan Gelderloos. "It took contributions from everyone on our team to reach that
goal which makes this all the more rewarding."
Gelderloos had special words for his seniors Alex Wilson and Becky Weima. "Alex
and Becky have been such a big part of our program and it is hard to put into
words the impact that they have had on our team," said Gelderloos. "Becky is
the most talented swimmer that Calvin has ever had but the thing that sticks
out with her is her leadership and attitude. She has set a positive tone for
this team for years to come. Alex has also been a great leader this year. She
has worked very very hard and I am extremely pleased to see her reap the fruits
of her labors at the national meet."
Gelderloos also cited the performance of Deur as a key to Calvin's fourth place
finish. "Heading into the three-meter finals tonight, we were trailing Denison
and in fifth place," said Gelderloos. "Erica was also in third place heading
into the finals but she saved her best for last, moved up a spot and really
gave our team a big lift. Then our 400 free relay swam a beautiful race. It was
the perfect way to end this meet."
