CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 28, 2007 (PART TWO)
HOCKEY TEAM OPENS NATIONAL TOURNAMENT WITH VICTORY
FORT WAYNE, IN -- The Calvin club hockey team opened ACHA Division III
Tournament play on Wednesday night with a 9-4 first round victory over
California University of Pennsylvania. Calvin (15-10) now moves on to a
national quarterfinal game on Thursday against Kennesaw State (GA). Thursday's
quarterfinal game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the McMillen Ice Arena.
California University of Pennsylvania (22-3) came into the game as the top seed
out of the Atlantic Region but Calvin was able to come out on top behind
hat-trick performances from junior Clay VerKaik (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and
sophomore Jeff DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Also scoring goals for
Calvin were freshman Caleb Barthel (Red Deer, AB), sophomore Nicholas Robinson
(Macomb) and junior Emery Lovse (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Senior Jon VanderHoek (St. Thomas, ON) and Lovse added three assists apiece.
Junior goaltender John Singleton (Highlands Ranch, CO) had 31 saves in between
the pipes for the Knights.
