All-MIAA Men's/Women's Basketball Teams Announced - Lisa Winkle Named Women's
MVP
Updated MIAA All-Sports Standings

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

For the second consecutive year, Lisa Winkle of the Calvin women's basketball
team has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. A year ago, Winkle shared
the award with Hope College senior Bria Ebels. This year Winkle is the sole
recipient of the award.

In addition, Winkle has been named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth
consecutive year. She is the first individual in the history of the MIAA to
receive All-MIAA first team honors four consecutive years in women's
basketball.

A 6-0 center, Winkle is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by
sophomore forward Marcia Harris who is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for
the second straight year. In addition, Calvin sophomore guard Kristi Brummel
has been named to the All-MIAA second team.

During the recent MIAA season, Winkle averaged 13.5 points and 10.9 rebounds a
game, finishing sixth in the league scoring race and winning the league
rebounding title for the third straight year.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High
School, Winkle also finished third in the MIAA in field goal percentage (.526)
and second in blocked shots per-game (1.94).

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Harris finished third in the MIAA scoring race (15.8 ppg), second in the MIAA
in field goal percentage (.587) and 10th in both free throw percentage (.700)
and steals per-game (1.81).

Brummel is from Byron Center and is a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian
High School. She averaged 7.9 points a game in league play and connected on
44.3 percent (27 of 61) of her three-point attempts which ranked second in the
final MIAA statistics. Brummel also averaged 1.5 steals per-game and shot 77.3
percent from the free throw line in league play this year.

The Calvin women's basketball team captured the MIAA regular season title with
a 16-0 conference record, joining last year's Hope team as the only two squads
MIAA women's basketball history to finish 16-0 in league play. The Knights are
currently 25-2 overall and will be facing Thomas More (KY) in a first round
NCAA III Tournament game on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Wilmington College (OH).
Calvin will be making its 11th trip to the NCAA III Tournament including its
third straight.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Three member of the Calvin men's basketball team have received All-MIAA honors.
Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are junior Derek Griffin and
sophomore Caleb Veldhouse. Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin is
senior Josh Meckes.

A native of Whitehall and a graduate of Whitehall High School, Griffin is
making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. He joined the Calvin
team this fall after transferring in from Muskegon Community College. A 6-2
guard, Griffin averaged 16.5 points a game in league play to finish fourth in
the league scoring race. A two-time MIAA Player of the Week selection, Griffin
also finished third in the MIAA in free throw percentage (.872), three-point
field goal percentage (.494) and was 10th in overall field goal percentage
(.497) and steals per-game (1.29). Griffin also led the MIAA in three-point
field goals made this year with 44 for an average of 3.14 per game.

A 6-2 guard, Veldhouse hails from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a graduate
of Sioux Falls Christian High School and is making his second straight
appearance on the All-MIAA first team. Veldhouse averaged 14.4 points a game to
finish sixth in the MIAA scoring race. He also ranked ninth in free throw
percentage (.778) and tie for third in three-point field goals made per-game
(3.5).

A 6-6 center, Meckes is from Bay City and is a graduate of Saginaw Valley
Lutheran High School. Meckes averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds a game in
league play, finishing 17th in the league in scoring and second in rebounding.
Meckes was also ranked 11th in the MIAA in field goal percentage (.491), 13th
in free throw percentage (.775), fifth in steals per-game (1.71) and seventh in
blocked shots (11). Meckes is making his second straight appearance on the
All-MIAA second team.

On Saturday night, Calvin wrapped up its third MIAA Tournament title in the
last four years, defeating Hope 78-76 in the MIAA Tournament finals on Saturday
night. With the tournament crown, Calvin received its fourth consecutive bid to
the NCAA III Tournament including its 17th overall.

Calvin (18-9 overall) will be facing 15th-ranked Aurora University (25-2) of
Illinois on Friday in an NCAA III Tournament first round game. The
Calvin-Aurora matchup is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. (CST).

MIAA ALL-SPORTS STANDINGS UPDATED THROUGH WINTER SPORTS SEASON

Hope tops the Commissioner's Cup standings after the winter sports season.
Winter sports champions were: men's basketball, Hope; women's basketball,
Calvin; men's swimming and diving, Olivet; women's swimming and diving, Calvin.
Fall sports champions were: men's and women's cross country, Calvin; men's
soccer, Hope; women's soccer, Calvin; football, Hope; volleyball, Calvin;
women's golf, Olivet and men's golf, Hope.

# The MIAA presents separate awards for the best cumulative finish in men's and
women's sports as well as an award for the best cumulative finish in all league
sports (men and women). The separate awards are known as the Men's All-Sports
Award and the Women's All-Sports Award while the cumulative award is known as
the Commissioners' Cup.

# The final standings for the all-sports awards will determined on the basis of
each college's standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine
sports for women. These point-totals will be added together to determine the
winner of the Commissioners' Cup.

# The standings after the winter season are based on five of six sports for men
and five of six for women.

# As a single sport member, Wisconsin Lutheran is not computed into the
all-sports standings.

# The Commissioner's Cup (MIAA All-Sports Award) has been presented since
1934-35. Hope has won the award 28 times, followed by Albion 14, Kalamazoo 13,
Calvin 8 and Alma 5.

# In 2005/2006, Hope won the Commissioner's Cup and both the Men's and Women's
All-Sports Awards.
