Women's Swimming and Diving Captures Third Straight MIAA Title;
Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Fourth

MIAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY THREE REPORT

JENISON -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team put the finishing
touches on its third consecutive MIAA title including its fifth overall by
finishing the three-day MIAA Championships competition with a school record
total of 675.5 points. The point total is the second-highest in MIAA Women's
Swimming and Diving Championships history, surpassed only by the 722 points
scored by Hope at the 1994 MIAA Championships.

The MIAA title joins the league crown won by the Calvin women's basketball team
Saturday afternoon. Combined, Calvin's women's athletics teams have now won
five of a possible six league crowns during the 2006-07 academic year.

The Calvin women's team captured took first place in four events on Saturday
night with senior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) having a part in two
of them. Weima captured the 100 freestyle title for the fourth consecutive year
and then anchored Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team to an MIAA record and NCAA
III automatic qualifying time of 3:29.12, breaking the previous record by more
than a full second. Weima was joined on the relay by junior Kat Vinson
(Kaneohe, HI), freshman Katie White (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior
Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL). An 11-time MIAA individual champion over the
course of her career, Weima was then named the MIAA's Most Valuable Swimmer for
the fourth straight year. There have been two three-time MIAA MVPs in women's
swimming and diving (Shelly Russel of Hope, 1987-89 & Dawn Hoving of Hope,
1992-94) but Weima is the first to receive the award four straight years.

Calvin sophomore Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) was also named the MIAA's
Most Outstanding Diver for the second straight year after winning the one-meter
competition with a MIAA record score of 478.20. Deur also captured the
three-meter competition on Thursday night with an MIAA record score of 489.25.
Deur was part of a 1-2-5 Calvin finish on the one-meter board as freshman Casey
Herman was second (424.75) and junior Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
fifth (378.55).

Senior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) capped off her MIAA career in sterling
fashion by winning the 200 breaststroke in a school record and NCAA III B' cut
qualifying time of 2:23.44, breaking her own Calvin record of 2:24.35 set in
2005. Wilson led a 1-2-4-5 Calvin finish in the 200 breaststroke as freshman
Emily Roberts (Dekalb, IL) had a second place and NCAA III B' cut qualifying
time of 2:26.41 while senior Barbara Gluvers (Placerville, CA) was fourth in an
NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 2:27.32 while freshman Maggie Vail (Portage
Northern HS) was fifth in 2:32.33.

Weima's win in the 100 freestyle was also part of a 1-2-3 Calvin finish with
White taking second (52.12) and Vinson third (52.58). The times by White and
Vinson were also NCAA B' cut qualifying times.

Calvin also picked up a top-six finish from freshman Laura Price (Warren, PA)
in the 1,650 freestyle as she placed sixth with a time of 18:19.00.

In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Jordan Scott (Oakville, ON) was fourth
(2:12.99) while freshman Jo VanderLinde (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was eighth
(2:16.47). Freshman Danielle Mitchell (Iron Mountain) also pitched in with a
fifth place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:16.36).

"It was an incredible three days," said Calvin head swim coach of his women's
team. "We got on a roll early and never let up. I'm extremely proud of every
one of my swimmers and divers. We had some great individual efforts for sure.
But this was also a great team effort all-the-way-around. Even the individuals
who were not in the finals were contributing with their encouragement. That's
what makes this championship all the more special for me."

In the men's competition, Calvin took fourth with 300.5 points, 63 points
behind third place Kalamazoo. Olivet captured its second straight MIAA title,
taking first place with a score of 536.5 points, nine points ahead of runner-up
Hope.

"I told our guys before today that no matter what they did tonight, I was
extremely proud of them," said Gelderloos. "This group got everything out of
the talent that it had. It was a great group of guys to coach."

Gelderloos also had the pleasure of watching senior Andrew Resseguie (Holland
Christian HS) capture his second MIAA individual crown in three days as the
Holland native won the 100 freestyle with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of
46.46. Resseguie is just the second 100 freestyle champion from Calvin in men's
swimming with Brad White wininng the 100 free in 2003. Resseguie was part of a
1-3 Calvin finish as junior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) was third in a
time of 46.88.

In the 1,650 freestyle, Calvin sophomore Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) came up
with a third place time of 16:45.55. Conrad then dug down to come up with a
sixth place time of 2:00.78 in the 200 butterfly. Junior Joe Gluvers (Rocklin,
CA) was third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.01. In the 400
freestyle relay, the Calvin quartet of Andrew Resseguie, John Boumgarden,
senior Andrew Bolles (West Ottawa HS) and senior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) took third with a season-best time of 3:09.31.
