Swimming and Diving Teams Split With Wayne State

The Calvin women's swimming and diving team upped its dual meet record to 8-1
on the season with a 124-119 victory over visiting Wayne State University
Saturday afternoon at the Bergsma Natatorium. The victory marked Calvin's
second of the year against a Division II GLIAC opponent as the Knights also own
a victory over Grand Valley State earlier this year.
Calvin was paced by senior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian High School) and
sophomore Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) with both individuals winning two
individual events each. Weima won the 100 freestyle (52.72) and the 200
freestyle (1:53.70. Her time in the 100 freestyle was a season-best and an NCAA
III B' cut qualifying time. Deur captured both diving competitions, winning the
one-meter (234.65) and three-meter boards (263.15). Deur was part of a strong
diving contingent for the Knights as junior Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) took third on the one-meter board (220.35) and fifth on the three-meter
board (215.95). Her score on the one-meter board was a career-best.
Other individual winners for Calvin included freshman Katie White (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) in the 50 freestyle (24.69) and senior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth,
OH) in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.02). Both times were season-best efforts.
Wilson also took second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:49.29.
Calvin also took both relay events with the team of senior Liz Ingebrigtsen
(Bensenville, IL), freshman Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), sophomore Julie Wolfe
(Westerville, OH) and junior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) winning the 200 medley
relay in a time of 1:52.64 while its 200 freestyle relay team of Weima, White,
Ingebrigtsen and Vinson took first place with a time of 1:38.22. Weima led off
the relay with a season-best and NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 24.17.
On the men's side, Calvin dropped a 143-90 decision to Wayne State, falling to
2-7 on the year. Despite the loss, Calvin had several sterling efforts
headlined by the performances of senior Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS)
who won the 50 freestyle (22.18) and 100 freestyle (48.58). Resseguie was part
of a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 100 freestyle as junior John Boumgarden
(Naperville, IL) was second in 49.39. Calvin also received a 1-2 finish in the
100 breaststroke with junior Lucas Seebeck (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning
with a time of 2:25.39 and junior Stephen Mellis (Redlands, CA) taking second
in 2:33.51.
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Boumgarden, freshman Kurt VanAllsburg
(Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Jon Herrema (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
and Resseguie took first place with a time of 1:29.26.
Both Calvin teams return to action on Friday when they host Grand Valley State
at 6:00 p.m. at the Bergsma Natatorium.
