Derek Griffin Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men's Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS -- For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior
guard Derek Griffin has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.
A native of Whitehall and a graduate of Whitehall High School, Griffin scored
43 points last week in leading Calvin to conference victories over Tri-State
and Alma. In an 80-64 win over Tri-State on Wednesday, Griffin scored a Calvin
career-high of 22 points on the strength of 6 of 8 shooting from three-point
range. He followed with 21 points in a 79-61 win at Alma on Saturday as he was
7 of 9 from the floor and 3 of 4 from three-point range.

On the week, Griffin was 15 of 21 (.714) from the floor, 10 of 13 (.769) from
three-point territory and 3 of 4 at the charity stripe. He also grabbed nine
rebounds and was credited with three assists and two steals.

On the year, Griffin is averaging 13.8 points and 2.9 rebounds a game and is
shooting 50.8 percent (32 of 63) from three-point land. He is also shooting
51.5 percent from the floor overall and 82.5 percent from the free throw line.

Calvin (7-5 overall, 2-0 MIAA) returns to action on Wednesday when it travels
to Adrian for an MIAA contest slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
