Women's Basketball Finishes 2-0 at Cal-Lutheran Posada Royale Tournament;
Men's Basketball Falls to UW-LaCrosse at Mose Hole Classic
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 81, Cal-Lutheran 43
THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- Calvin closed out its visit to the Cal-Lutheran Posada
Royale Tournament with an 81-43 victory over the host Regals Friday afternoon
at Cal-Lutheran's Gilbert Arena. Ranked 15th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25
poll, Calvin improves to 8-1 on the year with Friday's win over Cal-Lutheran.
Calvin used stifling first half defense to cruise to a 38-17 halftime lead,
holding the Regals to 15 percent field goal shooting. Meanwhile, Calvin was
able to connect on 57 percent of its first half field goal attempts as the
Knights were able to build a double-digit lead six minutes into the game.
Calvin's lead ballooned to as many as 44 points in the second half as the
Knights shot 53 percent in the final 20 minutes of play, finishing with an
overall field goal clip of 55.2 percent.
Calvin also forced Cal-Lutheran into 22 turnovers which resulted in 24 points
for the Knights.
Sophomore Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led all scorers with 20
points on 8-of-11 field goal shooting while also ripping down seven rebound and
collecting four steals. Harris and senior teammate Lisa Winkle (South Christian
HS) were both named to the all-tournament team with Winkle collecting
tournament MVP honors. Winkle scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting in the
rout over Cal-Lutheran and blocked two shots.
Freshman Allison Griswold (Lansing Christian HS) and sophomore Marissa Walker
(Cedar Springs HS) and freshman Brook VanEck (Lowell HS) were next with nine
points apiece while junior Lindsey Peuler (Grandville HS) had eight points and
two steals. Sophomore Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) also had five assists while
junior Racheal Willett (Rockford HS) had five points and seven rebounds.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 7:30 p.m.

Wisconsin-LaCrosse 87, Calvin 77
WOOSTER, OH -- A 20-point halftime deficit proved too much for Calvin to
overcome against nationally-ranked Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Friday night as the
Knights were defeated by the Eagles 87-77 in a first round game of the Mose
Hole Classic hosted by the College of Wooster.
Calvin will face host Wooster in the consolation game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Ranked number-one in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Wooster was upset by
seventh-ranked Ohio Northern 91-84 in Friday's second first round game.
Friday's game between Calvin and Wisconsin-LaCrosse featured a rematch of a
2006 NCAA III first round tournament game. Calvin won the 2006 encounter by a
79-71 score using a strong first half performance.
On Friday night, Wisconsin-LaCrosse turned the tables as it led 45-25 at
halftime behind 73 percent field goal shooting in the opening 20 minutes while
the Knights were able to shoot just 29 percent from the field.
Calvin trailed by as many as 24 points in the opening stages of the second half
before mounting a strong comeback effort, reeling off a 19-8 scoring run that
brought the Knights within 11 at 77-66 with two-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Calvin was able to creep to within nine points on a pair of free throws by
sophomore Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) with 30 seconds remaining but got
not closer.
Veldhouse finished with a team-high 19 points with all 19 coming in the second
half. Senior center Josh Meckes (Bay City, MI) had a strong all-around game
with 16 points and five rebounds while sophomore Dustin Smith (Hamilton HS)
tossed in 12 points off the bench.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse received 53 points from its backcourt tandem of Chris
Fehrenbach and Chris Ask with Fehrenbach collecting 29 points on 7-of-10
shooting including 5-of-7 from three-point range while Ask had 24 points.
Combined, Fehrenbach and Ask were 19-of-20 from the free throw line. Senior
center Joe Werner also had 17 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the
Eagles while Brandon Brown had eight points and eight assists.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse shot 62.2 percent overall and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from
three-point range. Calvin shot 41.5 percent overall including 52.9 percent in
the second half when the Knights outscored the Eagles 52-42.
