Capel, Weesies and Ribbens named to Division III NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes All-Region Teams

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Calvin College seniors Jill Capel and Sarah Weesies have been named to the NSCAA/adidas Division III Great Lakes All-Region first team while sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens has been named to the third team.

As members of the first team, Capel and Weesies are both now eligible for All-America consideration by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Capel and Weesies are both receiving Great Lakes All-Region honors for the second time from the NSCAA as Capel was a third team selection in 2005 while Weesies was a third team choice in 2003.

Capel and Weesies have been four-year starters for the Knights with Capel playing primarily in the midfield and Weesies at a forward spot. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Capel finished the 2006 season with 15 goals and 12 assists while Weesies collected 12 goals and 11 assists. Capel finished her collegiate career as the all-time Calvin leader in assists (48). She also finished tied for second on the Calvin career list for goals (75) and finished second in career points (199). Capel also finished 35th nationally in assists-per-game this fall (0.52). A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Weesies finished second on the Calvin career list for assists (45) and fourth in career goals (68) and points (181). Both players were named to the All-MIAA first team four consecutive years with Weesies receiving MIAA MVP honors in 2003 and Capel picking up MIAA MVP accolades in 2005 and 2006. Ribbens hails from Tinley Park, Illinois. She is a graduate of Victor J. Andrew High School. A forward, Ribbens scored 10 goals and chalked up eight assists this fall for a total of 28 points. Ribbens also received D3kicks.com all-region accolades earlier this week.

Calvin finished the 2006 season with a 22-0-1 record, setting a Calvin single-season record for victories. In addition to capturing their second straight MIAA title, the Knights also reached the national quarterfinals in the NCAA III Tournament - marking Calvin’s furthest advancement in the national tournament.

Calvin finished the year ranked fifth in the final Division III Top-25 Coaches' poll and in the final D3kicks.com Top-25 poll.

At 22-0-1, Calvin also led the nation in winning percentage (.978) and was third in team goals-against-average (.256), fourth in shutout percentage (0.74) and saves percentage (.921) and 40th in scoring offense, averaging 3.0 goals-per-game. Individually, freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Bergsma of Grandville Calvin Christian High School finished seventh nationally in goals-against-average (0.337) and 23rd in save percentage (0.882).

The final NCAA III women's soccer statistics were released this afternoon.
