DEVRIES NAMED All-AMERICAN By D3KICKS.COM/FIVE WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS NAMED TO GREAT LAKES ALL-REGION TEAMS

Calvin College senior defensive back Tricia DeVries has been named a third team All-American by D3kicks.com. This is the first year for the web site which is devoted to coverage of Division III men’s and women’s soccer.

In addition, DeVries is one of five Calvin players to receive Great Lakes All-Region honors from D3kicks.com. In addition to landing a spot on the D3kicks.com All-America team, DeVries has been named to the D3kicks.com Great Lakes All-Region first team. Named to the Great Lakes All-Region second team from Calvin are senior forwards Jill Capel and Sarah Weesies and freshman midfielder Emily Ottenhoff. Named to the Great Lakes All-Region third team from Calvin is sophomore forward Elizabeth Ribbens.

DeVries is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A four-year starter on defense, DeVries helped the Knights post 17 shutout victories and a goals-against-average of 0.26. Heading into the final week of the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin was ranked third in team goals-against-average and fifth in shutout percentage. Calvin’s defense also allowed only six goals during the 2006 season, setting a Calvin single-season record for fewest goals allowed. The previous record had been seven goals allowed by Calvin’s 1995 team that finished 17-0-1.

Capel and Weesies have been four-year starters up front. Capel finished the 2006 season with 15 goals and 12 assists while Weesies collected 12 goals and 11 assists. Capel finished her collegiate career as the all-time Calvin leader in assists (48). She also finished tied for second on the Calvin career list for goals (75) and finished second in career points (199). Weesies finished second on the Calvin career list for assists (45) and fourth in career goals (68) and points (181).

Ottenhoff is from Palos Heights, Illinois. She is a graduate of Chicago Christian High School. In her first year of collegiate soccer, Ottenhoff scored seven goals and collected three assists for a total of 17 points. Three of her goals were game-winners and two came by way of penalty kick.

Ribbens is also from the Chicago area. She hails from Tinley Park, Illinois. She is a graduate of Victor J. Andrew High School. A forward, Ribbens scored 10 goals and chalked up eight assists this fall for a total of 28 points.

Calvin finished the 2006 season with a 22-0-1 record, setting a Calvin single-season record for victories. In addition to capturing their second straight MIAA title, the Knights also reached the national quarterfinals in the NCAA III Tournament - marking Calvin’s furthest advancement in the national tournament.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Division III All-Region and All-America teams are scheduled to be released in the next two weeks.

MAURICE WRIGHT NAMED TO D3KICKS.COM ALL-REGION THIRD TEAM

Calvin College senior Maurice Wright has been named to the D3kicks.com Great Lakes All-Region third team in men’s soccer. A graduate of Wauwatosa East High School, Wright hails from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

A stopper-back on defense, Wright also managed to score three goals and collect two assists this fall for a total of eight points. Over the course of his four-year Calvin career, Wright scored eight goals and picked up 11 assists for a total of 27 points.

This fall, he helped the Calvin men’s soccer record an overall record of 10-5-5 including a third place finish in the MIAA with an 8-2-4 conference mark. Despite several first-year starters around him, Wright helped the Calvin defense post nine shutouts this fall and a team goals-against-average of 1.02. Calvin also finished the year with a nine-game unbeaten streak, posting a 7-0-2 record during that stretch.

At the conclusion of the year, Wright was named to the All-MIAA first team and was also voted the team MVP.
