FINAL NOTES ON CALVIN MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS FROM NCAA III
CHAMPIONSHIPS
*The national championship by the Calvin men's cross country team was its
fourth, moving the Knights into a tie for second place on the NCAA III men's
cross country list with Wisconsin-Oshkosh. North Central is the all-time leader
with 12 titles.
*The national championship is also the eighth in Calvin athletics history.
Calvin has now won more national title than any other MIAA school. Kalamazoo is
second with seven national championships -- all in men's tennis.
*The Calvin men's cross country team has now earned a top-four national trophy
nine consecutive years, finishing second in 1998, fourth in 1999, first in
2000, second in 2001 and 2002, first in 2003 and 2004, second in 2005 and first
in 2006. Over that nine-year span, no other NCAA III school has a better
combined set of national finishes.
*With six All-America performances on Saturday, the Calvin men's cross country
team has now produced 49 All-America berths all-time which ranks second on the
NCAA III career men's cross country list. North Central is the all-time leader
with 85 All-America berths.
*Calvin senior Tim Finnegan is now one of only 11 four-time All-Americans in
NCAA III men's cross country history. Although his collegiate career is now
complete, Finnegan has two seasons of outdoor track and field eligibility
remaining. Finnegan is a three-time All-American in track and field.
*The Calvin men's cross country team has now made 22 appearances at the NCAA
III Championships which ranks fifth on the all-time NCAA III list.
*With its third place finish on Saturday, the Calvin women's cross country team
recorded its eighth top-four national finish including its first since 1999.
*With three All-America performances on Saturday, the Calvin women's cross
country team has now produced 27 All-America berths all-time which ranks fifth
on the all-tie NCAA III women's cross country list.
*The Calvin women's cross country team has now made 17 appearances at the NCAA
III Championships which ranks fourth on the all-time NCAA III list.
MEN'S BASKETBALL -- CALEB VELDHOUSE NAMED MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN MEN'S
BASKETBALL
For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin sophomore guard Caleb
Veldhouse of Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls
Christian HS) has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.
Veldhouse was voted the most valuable player as the Knights won their own
tipoff tournament this past weekend.
In the games he scored 45 points in 46 minutes of playing time. In a 98-76
victory over Concordia, Wisc., he scored 16 points behind 4-for-4 shooting from
three point range. On Saturday, he followed with a career-high 29 points in a
79-60 win over Benedictine, Ill. In the games he shot 15-for-29, including
6-for-10 from three point range. He was 9-for-11 from free throw range with
seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING COMPETE AT QUANDRANGULAR IN CANTON, OHIO
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams were in action at a
quadrangular on Saturday with Denison serving as host. The competition included
teams from Calvn, Denison, Westminster and Wooster and was held in Canton,
Ohio.
In the women's competition, Calvin suffered its first dual meet defeat of the
year, falling to Denison 148-89. Calvin and Denison tied for sixth place at the
2006 NCAA III Championships with 199 points. Calvin did defeat Wooster 170-73
and Westminster 157-80 however to improve to 7-1 on the dual meet season. On
the men's side, Calvin fell to Denison 161-82 and to Westminster 138-99 but did
defeat Wooster 134-109. The Calvin men are now 2-6 on the dual meet season.
Highlights in the women's meet included senior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) winning the 100 (52.96), 200 (1:54.30) and 500 (5:12.26)
freestyle events while sophomore Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) won the one
and three-meter diving competitions. Weima's times in the 100 and 200 freestyle
were both NCAA III B' cut qualifying times. Deur captured the three-meter board
with an NCAA III qualifying and season-best score of 271.20. Deur won the
one-meter diving competition with a score of
229.27. Freshman Casey Herman added a second place finish on the one-meter
board (225.23) while sophomore Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second
on the three-meter board with a career-best score of 238.35 that was just shy
of an NCAA III qualifying mark. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of junior
Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI), freshman Katie White (Grand Rapids Christian HS),
sophomore Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) and senior Liz Ingebrigtsen
(Bensenville, IL) also took second with a time of 1:41.72.
In the men's meet, sophomore Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) had a strong effort in
the 1,000 freestyle, taking third with a time of 10:18.35. Senior Andrew
Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) added a second place finish in the 50
freestyle (22.48) and a fourth place finish in the 100 freestyle (48.96). In
addition, Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of senior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids
Christian HS), freshman Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior
John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and Andrew Resseguie took second with a time
of 1:29.53.
