Kristen Kalb Named First Team All-American in Volleyball;
Molly Krikke Named to Second Team - Vogel & Zondervan Receive Honorable Mention All-America Honors
Two members of Calvin’s nationally-ranked women’s volleyball team have been named Division III All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Calvin senior Kristen Kalb has been named a first team All-American by the AVCA while junior Molly Krikke has been named a second team All-American.
The awards will be presented Nov. 15, 2006, at the NCAA Division III Women’s National Championship banquet at Salem, Va. The NCAA Division III national quarterfinals begin Nov. 16.
It marks the first time a Calvin volleyball player has been named a Division III All-American since 2000 and it marks just the second time that two Calvin players have been so honored in the same year. Julie Dykstra, Leah Calsbeek and Roxanne Helmus all received All-America accolades in 1986.
The 5-9 Kalb is from Stow, Ohio. She is a graduate of Stow Munroe Falls High School. An outside hitter with junior athletic eligibility, Kalb is averaging 4.16 kills, 3.64 digs and 0.61 service aces-per-game. She also carries an attack percentage of .262.
Krikke also hails from the state of Ohio. She is from the town of Greenwich and is a graduate of South Central High School. A middle-hitter, the 5-11 Krikke is averaging 3.96 kills-per-game and a hefty hitting percentage of .385. She is also averaging 1.13 blocks and 0.39 service aces-per-game.
In addition, Calvin senior Lorilyn Vogel and junior Katie Zondervan have cited as honorable mention All-American by the AVCA.
Vogel is a 5-10 outside hitter from Orange City, Iowa. She is a graduate of Unity (IA) Christian High School. Vogel is averaging 3.49 kills and 1.01 digs-per-game and an attack percentage of .349. A two-sport standout at Calvin, Vogel also picked up All-America honors as a member of Calvin’s eighth place 4x100 meter relay team at the 2006 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Zondervan is a 5-7 setter from Lakewood, California. She is a graduate of Valley Christian High School. Zondervan is averaging 14.10 assists-per-game and is currently ranked second nationally in that category. Zondervan is also averaging 3.55 digs-per-game.
In a first round NCAA III Tournament victory over Nazareth College Thursday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse, Kalb collected 15 kills, seven digs and three service aces while Krikke had 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .435. Zondervan tossed out 41 assists and Vogel added 11 kills and an attack percentage of .625.
Ranked 11th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin (33-3) will bring a 24-match win streak into a Friday night regional semifinal meeting against rival Hope College (25-9).
