Men’s Basketball Picked #1 in MIAA Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll;
Women’s Basketball Picked #2 in MIAA Poll - 15th in D3hoops.com Top-25 poll;

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men’s basketball team was picked to repeat as MIAA champions in the pre-season MIAA coaches’ poll released earlier today. The Knights received four of a possible seven first place votes while Hope received third first place votes and Albion one first place vote. Coaches can not vote for their own team.

A year ago, Calvin captured the outright MIAA regular season title with a 13-1 conference record.

Calvin is scheduled to open its season November 17 when it hosts Grace Bible College in a first round game of the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Calvin women’s basketball team was been picked to finish second in the MIAA pre-season coaches’ poll released earlier today. Defending MIAA champion and NCAA III champion Hope College was picked to repeat as league champion as the Flying Dutch received seven of a possible eight first place votes. Calvin received two first place votes. Coaches can not vote for their own team.

In addition, Calvin is ranked 13th in the pre-season D3hoops.com Top-25 poll released earlier this morning. Scranton is picked number-one, Bowdoin (ME) number-two, DePauw number-three and Hope number-four.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Two members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have received Academic All-District honors from ESPN The Magazine in the college division. Senior Tricia DeVries has been named to the Academic All-District IV second team while senior Sarah Weesies has been named to the third team.

District IV includes schools from the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Alabama and Tennessee. The college division includes schools from the NCAA II, III and NAIA ranks.

A defensive back, DeVries is receiving Academic All-District honors for the first time. She is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A four-year starter, DeVries was an All-MIAA first team selection in 2004 and a second team selection in 2005. This fall, she has sparked a Calvin defense that has allowed just four goals this season and is currently ranked fourth nationally in goals-against-average (0.22). Ranked third in the latest Division III coaches’ poll, Calvin (19-0-0) has also posted 10 consecutive shutout victories and is ranked fifth in the NCAA III statistics in shutout percentage (0.78).

An accounting major, DeVries carries a 3.64 grade point average and has been a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

A forward, Weesies is receiving Academic All-District honors for the second time as she was a second team selection in 2004. A four-year starter, Weesies has scored 11 goals and collected 11 assists this fall for a total of 33 points. She has helped spark a Calvin offense that is ranked 28th nationally (3.39 goals-per-game).

Weesies is currently ranked fourth on the Calvin career list for goals (67) and points (179).

Weesies is an exercise science major at Calvin with a minor in psychology. She carries a 3.57 grade point average and is a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

This past weekend, seven members of the Calvin men’s cross country team received All-MIAA first team honors while seven members of the Calvin women’s team were also so honored. Both teams captured MIAA titles on Saturday at the MIAA Championships with the men posting a score of 17 points and the women posting a score of 15 points. The Calvin men have now won 20 consecutive MIAA titles while the Calvin women have won two straight including 18 of the last 19. The following is a recap of Calvin’s 14 All-MIAA Honorees.

CALVIN WOMEN’S ALL-MIAA SELECTIONS

LAUREN BERGSTROM, - A native of Century, Minnesota, Bergstrom took fifth at the MIAA Championships with a time of 23:35. A sophomore, Bergstrom is a graduate of Century High School. Bergstrom is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time.

LYNN MARSH - A native of North Vernon, Indiana, Marsh took 11th at the MIAA Championships this past Saturday with a time of 24:38. A graduate of Jennings High School, Marsh is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Marsh is a junior at Calvin.

CAMILLE MEDEMA - A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Medema took first place at the MIAA Championships with a time of 22:58. Medema was then named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Runner. A senior, Medema is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the third time in her career.

CHRISTINA OVERBECK - A native of Seattle, Washington, Overbeck took second place at the MIAA Championships with a time of 23:03. A graduate of Bellevue Christian High School, Overbeck is receiving All-MIAA first team for the second time. Overbeck is a junior in school.

CALAH SCHLABACH - A native of St. Michael’s, Arizona, Schlabach took fourth place at the MIAA Championships with a time of 23:27. A sophomore, Schlabach is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the second straight year.

LYDIA SINGER - A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Singer took third at the MIAA Championships with a time of 23:25. A senior, Singer is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the third time. A graduate of Hillcrest Academy in Jos, Nigeria, Singer was the MIAA’s Most Valuable Runner in 2005.

MARY TOLSMA - A native of Hawthorne, New Jersey, Tolsma took eighth at the MIAA Championships with a time of 24:24. A freshman, Tolsma is a graduate of Eastern Christian High School (NJ).

CALVIN MEN’S ALL-MIAA SELECTIONS

JED CHRISTIANSEN, - A native of Greenville, Pennsylvania, Christiansen took second at the MIAA Championships with a time of 25:01. A sophomore, Christiansen is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team. Christiansen is also a graduate of Greenville (PA) High School.

NATE DEHAAN - A native of Byron Center and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School, DeHaan took eighth at the MIAA Championships with a time of 26:00. He is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team.

TIM FINNEGAN - A native of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Finnegan picked up his second straight MIAA Most Valuable Runner award on Saturday by placing first at the MIAA Championships with a time of 25:01. Finnegan is also making his fourth straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team. He is the 15th individual in MIAA men’s cross country to earn All-MIAA first team honors four straight years. Of the 15 individuals, six have been from Calvin. Other four-year All-MIAA first team selections from Calvin have been John Brink (1979-82), Doug Diekema (1977-80), Robert Hyde (1993-96), Ryan LaFleur (1992-95) and Kris Koster (2000-03).

JON GRIES - A native of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Gries is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA second team. A junior who attended Upper Merion High School, Gries finished third at the MIAA Championships with a time of 25:14.

TAD HULST - A native of Zeeland and a graduate of Zeeland High School, Hulst finished fifth at the MIAA Championships with a time of 25:27. Hulst is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team.

HARRISON JORRITSMA - A native of Beamsville, Ontario, Jorritsma took sixth at the MIAA Championships with a time of 25:38. A graduate of Smithville District Christian High School, Jorritsma is making his third straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team.

ERIK VANKAMPEN - A native of Elmhurst, Illinois, Van Kampen took seventh at the MIAA Championships with a time of 25:54. A graduate of Timothy Christian High School, Van Kampen is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team.
