CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 1, 2006

Six Calvin Sports Teams Hold National Rankings - Men’s Basketball Opens at #8/Women’s Basketball at #15

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men’s and women’s basketball teams will open the 2006-07 season as nationally-ranked teams.

The Calvin men’s basketball team is ranked eighth in the D3hoops.com Top-25 pre-season Top-25 poll of the year while the Calvin women’s basketball team is ranked 15th in the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association Top-25 poll.

On the men’s side, Calvin finished the 2005-06 season ranked 14th in the final D3hoops.com Top-25 poll. Under the direction of head coach Kevin Vande Streek, the Knights return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s team that finished 23-7 overall and captured an MIAA regular season title with a 13-1 league mark. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the D3hoops.com poll as Hope is ranked 14th. Of interest, Calvin is scheduled to compete at the Mose Hole Classic hosted by the College of Wooster December 29 and 30. Three of the four teams in the tournament are in the D3hoops.com Top-25 and the remaining team is just one spot out of the poll. Calvin will open the tournament against a Wisconsin-LaCrosse team that received several national votes and sits just one spot out of the Top-25. Host Wooster is ranked second in the D3hoops.com poll while defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan is ranked number-one. Wooster will face Ohio Northern in the other first r!
 ound game at the tournament. Ohio Northern is ranked fifth in the D3hoops.com poll.

On the women’s side, Calvin finished the 2005-06 season ranked 25th in the final WBCA Division III Top-25 poll. Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Knights return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s team that finished 23-5 overall and earned a bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Defending national champion Hope from the MIAA is ranked second in the poll while the University of Scranton is ranked number-one.

The D3hoops.com Top-25 women’s poll is scheduled to be released Thursday morning. The MIAA pre-season coaches’ polls are scheduled to be released Thursday afternoon.

WOMEN’S SOCCER MOVES UP ONE SPOT IN BOTH NATIONAL POLLS

The Calvin women’s soccer team continues to move up in the national rankings. Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, the Knights are ranked second in this week’s D3kicks.com Top-25 poll and third in this week’s Division III Coaches’ poll. It marks a move up of one spot in each poll for the Calvin women’s soccer team, now 19-0-0 on the season.

The women’s soccer team is scheduled to face Hope on Saturday at noon in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM MOVES UP TO 12th IN NATIONAL RANKINGS

The Calvin women’s volleyball team has moved up one spot in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association of America Top-25 poll. The Knights are ranked 12th in this week’s poll after being ranked 13th last week. Juniata continues to be ranked number-one.

Under the direction of head coach Amber Warners, Calvin returns to action on Friday night when it hosts Saint Mary’s at 7:30 p.m. in an MIAA Tournament semifinal match.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS REMAIN IN NATIONAL POLL

The Calvin men’s cross country team is again the top-ranked team in Division III. The Knights again received all seven first place votes in this week’s Division III Coaches’ poll with defending national champion Wisconsin-LaCrosse ranked second. New York University is ranked third and Cortland State of New York fourth.

The Calvin women’s cross country team is ranked seventh in the latest Division III Coaches’ poll, down one spot from last week. Under the direction of head coach Brian Diemer, both Calvin cross country teams are preparing to compete at the Great Lakes Regional meet November 4 at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.
