GRAND RAPIDS - Nothing less than an exciting game is expected when Calvin battles Hope and that is what fans at Zuidema Field witnessed on a cloudy and overcast afternoon. After suffering a 4-2 defeat at Hope’s Buys Field earlier in the season, the Knights wanted to get revenge on their rivals.
The game also marked final home games for senior tri-captains Nathan Kooi (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian), David Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids) and Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East). These seniors did everything they could to extend their final home game by taking the Flying Dutchmen through two overtimes. But when it was all said and done, the final score read 0-0.
Even though neither team was able to find the back of the net, both teams had their scoring opportunities. Hope held the slight shot advantage at the end of the game at 11-10 and Calvin goalkeeper Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) kept the Knights in the game with four saves.
Through both overtimes, only one shot from Hope was fired. Hope’s goalkeeper Michael Ammerman ended the game with five saves.
When these two teams meet, a physical game is always inevitable. There were 43 combined fouls and three yellow cards assed; two of them handed out to the Knights.
Calvin has two road games remaining in the season and their next one will come Wednesday when they travel to Kalamazoo. Calvin continues to hold third place in the MIAA standings but is now just one point ahead of fourth place Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS - The Scots of Alma came to town Saturday afternoon for a first round MIAA Tournament game. Coming in with a perfect 17-0 record, the Knights were looking to extend their flawless streak.
It didn’t take long for the Knights to get on the board. A little over two minutes in, sophomore Ashley Bolen (Urbana, IL/Urbana) sent a booming corner kick across the front of the net which found the head of freshman Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian) and then making it into the goal. It was her fifth goal on the year.
Calvin remained silent for a while but then kicked it into gear towards the end of the first half. Bolen fired a direct kick which bounced off the goalie and went right to senior Noell Berghuis (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) who knocked it in. Bolen was credited with her second assist of the game. Seven minutes following, senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) found sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew) streaking down the right side. Ribbens took the pass and blasted it toward the far post giving the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead.
With under seven minutes to go in the half, sophomore Jessica Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) added the icing to the cake scoring off a rebound shot initially fired by Capel. Capel was awarded the assist and the Knights went into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
The second half saw no more scoring but the Knights continued to apply pressure on the Scots’ end. Calvin ended the game with a 26-6 shot advantage. Goalkeepers Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian), Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield), and Lynae Steketee (Holland/Holland Christian) combined their efforts for another shutout victory and collected three saves total.
The Knights will host Kalamazoo College on Tuesday at 3:00 in second round MIAA Tournament action.
