OLIVET - The Knights finished regular-season play this evening with their ninth consecutive shut-out victory and an impressive 17-0-0 overall, 8-0-0 MIAA record. Calvin is currently ranked third in the nation on the D3kicks.com Top 25 Poll and fourth in the Division III Coaches’ Poll.

While freshmen goalkeepers Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield) and Lynae Steketee (Holland/Holland Christian) combined to keep Olivet scoreless, the Calvin offense rained 13 shots-on-goal on Olivet’s Shane Brady. Though Brady had nine saves, Calvin came up with four goals.

Calvin’s only goal in the first half came in the 20th minute and came from the foot of freshman Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian) off of a corner kick. The Knights struck again ten minutes into the second half when senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) made her 14th goal of the season off an assist by sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew). Ribben’s assist was her eighth on the season.

In the 72nd minute of play Ribbens scored as Capel dished out the assist. Calvin held a 3-0 lead as Ribbens gained her eighth goal of the year. With less than two minutes to play, Calvin scored a last time as Ottenhoff drove in her fourth collegiate goal, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity.

Calvin out-shot Olivet 17-5 with Sulzer playing 77:00 and having two saves.

With her goal and assist on Wednesday, Capel brought her career point total to 191, moving her past Tricia Dyk and into second place on the Calvin career list. Tara (Dyk) Wegner is the Calvin career leader with 263 points.

The Knights now look forward to Saturday as they host Alma at noon for the first round of the MIAA Tournament, of which Calvin is the top seed.
